How to differentiate between 4cyl and V6 axles

How can you tell if a toyota front axle came from a 4cyl or a V6? Any differences I could tell without pulling the third or is that necessary? Thanks.

front solid axle? there was never a V6 solid front axle, all where 4 bangers. if you're talking IFS "axles", they are the same no matter which engine the truck had.

X2, the only difference is the third and thats a bearing difference on the pinion.

The third member itself is more heavily ribbed, and the R&P's are v6-specific. I'm referring to the rear axle though.

The V6 third can be put into the front, but (IMO) that's not really needed till you're at 38's or bigger.

V6

The V6 housing is ribbed more for strength and there is a large difference in the thickness of the ring gear. It is a much stronger combo. You can run them front or rear. You can also run a FJ80 high pinion in the front, which is the same size as the V6 gears and are reverse cut for the added strength in the front. All Toyo 8" stuff will work with the FJ80 high pinion.

Thats what I was wondering... I also was looking for a detroit for a solid front axle and i came up with V6 detroit and one that was for 4cyl both said for toy solid front 8"... So the thirds can be swapped from the rear to the front? Whats the difference between a V6 rear and 4cyl rear? Just the housing and the gear thickness and the third being heavier ribbed? thanks for your patience with my noobie toyota questions...

Toyo thirds

They are interchangeable, front and rear. The only difference is the strength.

The major differences between the V6 and 4 are the size of the bearings and the pinion. The V6 has larger bearings and the pinion is a little smaller. You can also use 4 cyl gears in a V6 housing if you want. :D

I thought I read somewhere that the 4cyl 4x4 trucks came with the v6 thirds. Is that correct?

I believe you're thinking of tacomas, where the 4 cylinder non-TRD package 4x4's & pre-runners have the same third member (the 8.4") as a V6 "little truck" (like my old s-runner), and the 4-cyl "little trucks" still have the smaller third (7.5", IIRC)

None of which which will work in a pre-taco axle.

Ok, based on this, the third in the front of this 85 truck I have is good till I go beyond 38s (36 is my goal) The third in the rear is the non desirable one and I should find a v6 third.

Thanks for the info, trying to bone up on as much yota tech as possible!!

Yep with an e locker!

the stregnth difference is big, but 4cyl thirds will take a lot of abuse. i have had 0 problems with my welded 4cyl thirds and i have BEAT on the rear for 4 trips. i wouldnt worry about it
