Hey guys I have a 1978 cj5 and I was wondering what are some cheap things I can do to get some of the play out of my steering in my jeep. I replaced the steering box and that helped alot. I didn't know if there was anything else I could do. It is manual steering if you couldn't figuare that out yet.
I am currently working on a friend's 84 CJ and I put on a steering damper for him and it seemed to help. (his has a 13.5" steering wheel, harder to fight)
If its power steering, there are a few differnet aftermarket PS box brackets out there that are way stiffer than the factory stack of stamped sheet metal bracekts. I have one from Big Daddy's Offroad. I noticed a huge difference when I put a steering box brace. It bolts around the steering box then ties that to the passenger side frame rail.
I guess before you start throwing parts at it, you need to make sure all your existing stuff is good. Have someone saw the wheel back/forth while you are underneath checking for excessive play in the TRE's, etc. See if the steering box flaps around too.
I have an 83 Cj. I installed a borgeson steering shaft, Big daddy off road steering box brace, big daddy tie rods and new ends, red neck ram hydraulic ram assist w/modified pump and rebuilt steering box.
I had also installed new springs and bushings (4 inch lift). and shackles. After all it developed the wobble. I checked the torque on the u-bolts and tighten them. That solved the problem. I guess they had worked loose over the course of a few months.
