HP44 axle shaft question

HP44 from a 78 Bronco in my TJ. When I built the axle recently, I replaced everything except the shafts. I even put new u-joints in it. First trail ride, I broke the driver's side shaft. I figure if I'm going to replace 1, I'll just replace them both since I assume they are 31 years old and maybe the other side is fatigued (plus, might as well throw a locker in while its apart).
Question: Anybody know anything about these cromoly shafts?

By the time you buy ujoints, these are only about $20 more than a set of OEM shafts. I just wonder why these are so much cheaper than other cromo shafts. Are they junk?

They are supposed to be yukon shafts but there is no name on them. I was told by a guy at broncograveyard that if they put yukon on their ad they have to charge a certain price, but if there is no name they can sell them cheaper. I dont know how that works exactly but whatever.

I had that same shaft set with spicer 5-760x (i think) joints in the locked d44 in my 78 f150 with 38" tsls. I only broke one driver outer shaft in 2 years of wheeling, and that was doing a 4 wheel burnout on pavement axle hopping to pull a friend out of a ditch before i got a winch. Bronco graveyard waranteed the axle for me (I told them I had 36s on the truck when they asked ) no charge.

Go ahead and order the full circle c clip kit and the spicer joints (unless you want the high dollar joints) from them too unless you want to search around locally for some. I have the d60 version of that kit in the 79 d60 that I swapped under my f150, and the d44 that came out with those shafts will be replacing the ttb d44 crap thats under my dads 88 bronco this winter.

Thanks for the info Tim C. I was shocked when it broke, I am only running 35s with an open front and the stock 4.0 in my TJ.

It uses the same u-joint as the 30 so how much stronger can it be?

I've got two buddys running the Nitro stuff from chase at ECGS with no problems. One on 37" creepys and one on 37" mtrs both locked.

Yukon is worse than factory. Guy two twisted both stubs one inner and twisted one completely in two the first time out.:shaking:
