Hydraulic Assist Question

West Texas has a tech section on their site that show you how to mod the pump, definately helps when running the ram.

i would try the stock pump first, it should work. those mods to the pump work, but also decrease the life of the pump drastically.

Nice tech article, so I guess all I need to do is drill it out like he said then remove the shim and the stock 4.3 pump aught to do fine!

It should be fine.

I thought you were puttin the blazer engine in the sammy? plans change?

I was lookin at the Blazer and all thats messed up on the frame stops right b4 the upper a arm mounts and then the front clip so I realized i could just cut that part of the frame off cut off the screwed up front clip and exo tube around the engine and I have an already wired up runnin blazer! So the samurai has no drivetrain or future plans, gues its goin to storage . . .

Good point might as well try it and see what happens since it wouldn't take much to mod it after if I realze I need it.

Cool, I can't remember the ram size off the top of my head its at home right now and I'm up here at State untill fri when exams are over, i'll check it out when i get back, but it sounds like it's gonna work.

Another issue I'm thinkin about is since im gonna run a radius arm setup similar to early bronco's and tubing the front I can pretty much stick the axle as far forward as I want, except for the where I will have to mount the steering box. So here's my next question, if you take a pitman arm that normally mounts pointing backward and flipp it around to pointing forward then switch the lines from the pump to the box will it steer like normal instead of opposite or is it not possible to reverse the way the power steering box works?

You can't flip the pitman arm around, it would steer opposite. But you could run a box from an Astro van. If you haven't mounted the yj box, call Matt @ West Texas, if he has the astro box, he'll probably swap it for you.

Yea i figured you couldn't just thought maybe if you switched the hydralic lines backward it would would steer it backward thus cancelling out the backward drving that flipping the pitman arm around would cause.

It's not that serious of a deal to where I need to get another one, I'll just prob have to put new metal on where I cut the bent frame parts off to make room for the steering box.

Ricky I run a 2 inch bore 8" ram, and use a stock CJ pump no issues.

that is great to know, i am going with that exact setup when i get motivated to install it...

There's that metal thingy that connects your steering wheel to the steering box... THAT's what turns the wheels.. hydraulics just help. Think of it that way and it'll make more sense.

I got a Redneck Ram Hydraulic Assist setup. It's a yj box they rebuilt and tapped with the lines and ram. I want to run it on my S10 Blazer when I swap in the Built axles I have. My question is will the power steerin pump on the 4.3 be powerful enough to run the assist?
Thanks
yes
