I'm installing a Pierce-Arrow dump conversion on my truck, and the manual calls for automatic transmission fluid. However, it doesn't specify what type of ATF, and I run AW46 hydraulic oil in everything else I own, so I was thinking about running that in the tank instead of ATF. Its a brand new cylinder and power unit, so no issues with mixing. I have several other things that can use ATF or hydraulic oil, so I figure its fine, but thought some of you's guys might be experts on the topic.

I’m pretty sure they can interchange. I know several people that swear by one or the other though but I think they’ll both work the same except under high heat situations. A quick google search and I came across this

ATF is a premium hydraulic fluid, but also comes at a premium price, which is its major downside. ... However, ATF is closer in quality to synthetic hydraulic fluid, and with this consideration, ATF can be seen as fairly reasonable in price

As I understand it ATF is basically hydraulic fluid with extra detergents.
Ive been told its the detregents that give it the red color, and hence why its black/brown when used up.
