I used to have hydro assist on my jeep, but the steering kept bucking and was not very responsive, so I took it off.

Now looking back, I think I needed more fluid to keep the steering more responsive and get rid of the bucking. I have also added a cooler to the power steering now.

So how should I add more fluid to the system? Get a separate reservoir? Get a bigger reservoir? If I get an additional one, where should I get it, and how do you tie it into the system?

Thoughts or suggestions?

Some folks just put a radiator hose on thop of the resv. You can add a cooler tie it into the return line. An inline canister filter will add volume too.

I added a fluid can from Speedway Motors to mine, plumbed at Pirtek. Bring it by the house and I'll hook you up, oh, that's right, maybe I'll come to you

I ran one for a while but after about a year the hot fluid broke the hose down and it would suck shut at higher rpms,so if you choose to go that route might wanna get one w a wire in it.Im runnin a ext res, plus the stock pump res,a Exploder tranny cooler and a remote filter on mine.Mine will hold about a gallon of hyd fluid.

I had that issue too, but I'm full Hydro. 2 cylinders & hydro boost. I built an expansion tank and extra resv. out of an old drive shaft & used a large Hyd.oil cooler. My system is about 2.5 gal. & my pump is moving approx 7.5-8.5 GPM @ 2000 rpm.

With Hyd. assist I didn't think it would collapse the hose, possibility though I'd go with the wire too.

A cooler is a good idea. If I start having problems with my hydro I usually change my pump to a new one.It is stock nothing fancy and I run 44's.

ON my CJ I ran a stock pump, with an added reservoir, was a radiator hose clamped to the top of it. Was on a Jeep 360 so they sit high. I had to get a hose with a 90* bend, then a piece of pipe, then a turn up with a cap. Held about a Qt more than stock. I was running a cooler, and a 2X8 tractor type ram. No issues at all other then if I wanted to turn quick, it would slow down, but slow easy turns were no problem. On the road, I didn't know it was there. I was running a 60, 14 B combo with 44 TSL's
Also to aid in the force you get when you turn, have your arm as far away from the center as you can. Leverage helps a lot.

I run the exact same thing as Upnover with rockwells and 49's on the street. Only thing i'll add is I bumped my idle up a hair to help when I'm in parking lots at low speed trying to fit in a space. My ram is mounted inline with the tierod. Use HP hoses to.
