I am looking into adding hydro assist to my build up. Where is the best place to shop? I also need the cooler with it as well.

Brandon At Rides
Dave at Olivers in Winston Salem
Chase at ECGS in Ral.

All three are great vendors. I can bring it back from Rides if need be, they are going to work on my jeep next week.

You can get a ram and hyraulic lines from Tractor Supply or Northern Tool. You get an auto transmission cooler from any auto parts store to use as a cooler. Those are the parts I am running.

^ X2

Get a ram from Northern Tool or Tractor Supply, cooler from AZ or similar, we'll drill and tap the steering box and I'll make you some hoses at PIRTEK. What I'm running on The Krawler.

Should run you about $80 total.

hydro assist will just make you want full hydro that much more

Yeh, that is about where I am at with my cab truck. Contemplating changing to full hydro.

My hyrdo assist works pretty good when I have the RPMs up

why do you say that? Is yours slow? I have hydro assist and to be quite honest i dont think ill ever go full hydro with my setup. I just like the fact if i blow a pump or a line i can cap off the box and get back to the truck fairly easy.

IDK about that.....If my pump isn't running then the tuck is almost impossible to steer. I sheered the steering colum off moving the truck around to get it on the trailer. It's fixed now but I had to load it the rest of the way.....steering it with a pair of vise grips.

I should have read this thread last night instead of this monring... just bought a used setup for $125, it is not $80, but still less than $1200 for a new one.

I am thinking hydro assist will do me well for now, I am only going to be running 35s so I could probably get away with the stock steering, but this will just make it that much easier to steer

^^^ What if you break the box or linkages?

well id be fucked then too! But with hydro assist the there isnt near the stress on the box. I prolly will go to full hydro when or if i ever link the front of my junk, but for stock wb with no issues of haveing the box in the way i dont see why you wouldnt run the box.

ouch that sucks. My buddy runs full hydro on his rockwell rig, and had to steer it out of the woods without power a couple times. SUCKED

Well there are many places, where you will get your stuff but from personal experience I would suggest you to check out autopartsfair.com, as not only will you get warranty on each purchase that you make but also the parts are OEM certified and they come at a very reasonable cost.
I checked out the website but I couldn't find any OEM certified hydro assist parts for my TJ. Care to elaborate on your personal experience? What vehicle did you equip with hydro assist and what part numbers did you use?

So what is the story with this? I'm looking at hydro assist for my race rig and was budgeting for $1200, what is the difference between a PSC kit and an $80 Northern Tool/Tractor Supply?

with the psc kit you dont have to think about it at all. its the right ram. the steering box is ported right, the right pump (if thats part of the kit) its all matched. All you have to figure out is how to mount the ram.

If you do all the leg work, to get the right ram, lines, and port the box its cheaper to buy parts and DYI. However, your on your own when shit goes wrong.

Surplus Center single ended cylinder is about $80, hoses are $12 each at Northern Tool, fittings are $20 at Northern Tool, tap for the fittings is $10 at Lowe's, parts store tranny cooler is about $30. I have done them that way for a long time with great results.
Or just buy a matched kit and be done like Mr Herr said.

I'd like to see what they do inside a steering box on one of those expensive kits. I'm betting it is just a rebuilt unit.

I'm just glad that the random spammer revived a thread from 2010 ;)

As you are looking for hydro assist and cooler so it’s very important that you consider the quality aspect because it’s very important. Keeping this in mind you can have a look on various online used parts stores who are dealing in used auto parts such as automotix, pullaparta and various others.

Ah yes, pullaparta, they have the BEST hydro assist parts!

gotta love the dead thread revivals
Fo reelz. (wait, maybe I shouldn't put that, because then the fishing reel spammers will be in here...)

There is no way you can do it for 80 at all unless it's all used. The ram alone is 94 at TS, the premade lines they have are 38-55 each, the cooler is 25-50, I put a 12v fan on my cooler that was another 15, few tabs 15-20, few fittings 20, fluids, ect. For 125 you got a deal clay.
