So I bought a new tv. I broke down and got a 37 inch Samsung LCD 1080p. Man this thing kicks ass, but of course now I want to upgrade the rest of my home theater.

First I'm looking at either a new dvd player or a Blu-ray player. Is the blu-ray really worth the 400 dollars? If I do that, then fuck it I'll just buy a PS3. Otherwise, these new DVD players that do the 1080p upcoverting with HDMI outputs, are they worth it? I can get one of those for 100 bucks, where as the cheapest blu-ray I can find is 400, the same exact price for a ps3.

Another thing I'm looking to upgrade is my sound system. I've got a panasonic 5.1 DVD player/home theater deal now. If I get a new DVD player, then I'll just get a new home theater system that's just the stereo.

Any recommendations on either of these? I'm not looking to spend an arm and a leg, I just dropped one of each on this TV.

blue ray rules. get a ps3 or shop out a dvd player if you don't play games..

I've seen Blu-ray players for quite a bit less than 400, but you have to decide if it's worth it with your particular screen size. Blu-ray has obviously won the 1080p war, so it'll likely be out for a while.

Does the PS3 upconvert non-BR DVD's to 1080p?

The PS3 is the way to go for bluray at the moment. BR players should be in the $250 range for Christmas. The PS3 upconverts dvd to 1080P pretty well. I'd either pickup a PS3 or an unpconverting dvd player right now and try to wait out the bluray player for feature set/price maturation.

What made you pick the tv you chose?

I've found a ps3 for pretty cheap, I hope to pick it up in the next day or two.

I chose this TV because it had all the features I wanted, as well as it was 1080p and in my price range.

I hear ya man, buyin an HD TV is an investment these days! I went with a Toshiba with 1080i LCD. It has the PC input, so I surf the web and run all my pc applications wirelessly on my TV. If you have a laptop this is simple to do and you can drag over from one screen to the TV or just use the TV as the monitor. The PC input was a must for me.

As for blue ray, yea that is the best way to go, no it wont read regular DVDs (cause then they cant charge more for new technology). If you were to go with a gaming console i would say XBox, but i havent played the PS3 yet so i do not know. The Wii is every entertaining as well but they do not utilize the graphics engine as well. Have fun with your new purchase!

PS - Comporium cable is garbage! I got DVR with HD Channels and HD HBO, I havent been able to watch one HD movie on HBO. I complained to Comporium and they pretty much laughed at me cause they have a monopoly over Rock Hill. Its either them, satelite, or bunny ears!

I just bought a new Yamaha and Klipsch sound system. sounds great. Go to pawn shops and check I have found great deals there and def buy a ps3 there worth the money. As far as cheaper blu-ray players you get what you pay for Ps3 has one of the best on the market!
