So... german neighbor lady came over at lunch. Says she's got an 01 Volvo V40 (1.9L int. turbo) wagon that blew the head gasket and toasted the motor. According to the Volvo place, the V40 wasn't a very good car, and it's not worth putting a new motor in it.

Question #1: What can she do with the busted car? Donate it? I don't imagine there's much market out there for non-running late-model Volvos, but who knows?

Question #2: Any recommendations on a new vehicle? She says she likes the Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4 and Ford Escape. I don't know anything much about those three, or the unibody cute-ute segment in general.

I didn't think to ask what her budget was, but I know she spent plenty of cash trying to keep that damn Volvo on the road... so she can certainly afford something decent.

answer 1: downhill racer

answer 2: I hate them all but the toyota is a great SUV. my friend has a rav-4(that i make fun of) and his sister has an escape. the escape is garbage, the rav 4 runs great

336-273-0256 Swedish Autoworks here in Greensboro, buddy of mine owns the place (Jay). He may be interested in buying it, or repairing it (cheaper than the stealership). Give him a shout.

If she donates it, she is only allowed to claim a tax deduction for what the donating agency gets for the car (i.e. when they sell it). Also, donating a non-running car to a NFP will probably mean they will incur more expenses trying to sell it than they will get out of it. I say sell it to a scrap yard for the metal. As far as her next vehicle, my wife's mother has an escape and she loves it, they also make a hybrid 2x4 version.

Of the three listed, NOT the ford escape. Horrible memories of that thing when I kept getting stuck with them as rentals.
(granted older, so maybe they've improved, but doubt it)
The other two are basically a taller civic/corolla with worse gas mileage.
But drive like a car, etc.
The escape just did nothing well in my opinion.

Shawn - contact wheels4hope. They're in Raleigh. non-profit, etc..

They have a deal with a local wrecker who can pick it up, too.

shawn, drop me a pm... i'll give you the contact info for a local guy i know that specializes in volvos. he might give a few bucks for it, i know he buys wrecked ones to fix/sell.

looks like #1 was answered.

#2. I'd suggest the Volvo XC90. We just got one this week and really love it. Its super nice with all the little gadgets inside, confortable, powerful, rides nice, and was really affordable considering that it was a Volvo and had all the little upgrades, etc. It'll hold its value much better than those other "disposable" vehicles you mentioned.
