I just got back from a 5 day trip to the USMC Air Ground Combat Training Center in 29 Palms, CA. I was training Marines in basic off road driving techniques in HMMWV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMMWV) and MRAP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRAP_(armored_vehicle)) vehicles. 110 degree days, full sun, no shade, sand dust, full flack jackets and kevlar helmets gave me a renewed appreciation for the types of things our servicemen in Iraq and Afghanistan have to endure! All the Marines I worked with were young and inexperienced but eager to learn and very appreciative of our training. We ran some fairly tough terrain and trained them in Expedient Field Repair as well as in recovery techniques. Being very experienced with the H1, and knowing what a crappy vehicle it is, I was surprised to find that the 8,000 pound heavier HMMWV performed better off road. All in all, it was a great experience and I look forward to having a role in training our troops for combat in the future!
