Ideas on how to run 24V winch in 12V system?

I procured a 24V winch from a Hummer about a year ago, and have honestly not really deeply thought about how to run it in my CJ5 until now. The CJ is of course 12V. Id rather not spend the near $500 that would be required to buy the 12V motor and solenoid pack. I'm not against running dual batteries. I just have to figure a way to have the alternator also charge both batteries, while keeping one isolated from the rest of the Jeep, as I really would prefer to not let the magic smoke out of most everything. Ideas?

2 alternators...one for each batt...?? then have to have like a knife type switch to put them in series for winching...I think you would have to isolate the charging wires back to the 12 volt alternators too...but may be a simpler/better way to rig this up without a lot of manual switching around of cables...I'll have to think about it some more...

or get a seperate 24 v alternator off a CUCV or other military rig for your winch batteries

Just get 4 new 12v solenoids and have the motor rebuilt to 12v. We had that done and it was about $150. There's a guy that does them in TN and he advertises on ebay.

I have done this exact thing for the winch on my buggy. It is an old humvee winch.

Just get a new 12V motor and 2 solenoids. I purchased mine, with shipping and solenoids, was about $130.

I think this is the one: http://www.db-starter-alternator.co...ch Motor 20 Spline HEAVY DUTY AMT0406 LRW0005
I also think this may be who Shawn is talking about as they are located in Gray, TN.

I just called and talked to the winch motor tech. I think his name was Rob. I told him what I was doing and he was familiar with my application. He even had solenoids and a wiring diagram that only required 2 solenoids, not 4 like most factory winches.

Mine works great.

I looked at doing the motor swap, but when I contacted that same company I was told that they didn't have a motor that would work for me. I guess I need to look at the winch again tomorrow and see the part number on the motor. I'd really love to have this on my CJ for summer wheeling, but I really do not want to spend the over $500 that Warn quoted me for parts.

DB Electrical DOES have the motor you need. In stock? I don't know. But, that is where I got mine for my ex military Warn 24V winch.

See the pic below of my winch during cleanup. I'm sure its the same one you have. I will try to find the part number of the one I ordered.

It looks very similar. I am going to get the PN off of the winch tomorrow and call them up to see if they have any ideas. I can live with $200, but $600 was pushing the limit of me just buying a new winch. Let me know.

All I can say is to call them. I didn't look for the receipt last night, but I can tonight to make sure I get you a part number.

Keep in mind, you need to talk to their winch motor tech guy. Other guys I talked to there didn't know what I was talking about. I think his name was Rob.
