Ignition Switch Problem

I have an '84 CJ7 with a '95 LT1 motor. The ignition switch is GM pictured below. The switch recently started not turning the ignition off all the way. It barely turns the motor off. I bought the Jeep this way and fixing this issue isn't in my wheelhouse so I thought I'd start here looking for some advice. Is replacing the switch the most likely first step? If so, what's the procedure?

It's probably a piece in the column called the ignition rack. They sell it on the help aisle at most parts stores. It's a real common problem on GM style (Saginaw) columns. Even fords used a version of that column in the 80s.

You'll have to pull the column half apart to get to it. It's not terribly hard but requires some special tools that you may be able to rent from the parts store and some patience.

The only other thing to check would be the electrical portion of the switch that's bolted to the top of the column under the dash. Sometimes the switch will come apart and cause weird issues or the bolts will loosen and the whole switch will move instead of the inner contacts.

Great info....thanks. I started ripping it apart. I ordered a steering wheel puller so I'll continue when I get it.
