looking to buy a welder to learn on and came across a lincoln SP170T with cart for $400. the guy says it has about 50 hours on it and it looks super clean. i didnt get to talk to the guy long enough(was working) but noticed there was no tank or regulator so im not sure if it was using flux wire or if he had just removed it. questions are: is this a decent welder to start with and eventually use on some projects? if it is flux how hard/ expensive is it to hook up and run gas? anybody used one? complaints/ likes? very green on this subjuct and just looking for insight. thanks.

Not a bad deal I have a 180 and it burns in very nicely. Its a good welder to start with. It should come with a regulator and a bottle is about 200 to 300 bucks.

Price sounds high, I got the 175T off ebay brand new for around $400 with a regulator in late '07 . Clean or not, I think the 170 would have to be older, they're onto the 180s now.

I'd keep looking, you can get a bit more amperage and a regulator included for close to that price. Millermatics and Hobart handlers are also good 220 migs.

One thing to check on is the country of manufacture. Currently the tapped output linc's are assembled in mexico. If that 170 was made in the USA that'll help explain the price a bit.
