inspection thread got me thinking

since the p.o. of my yota was gracious enough to disable the parking brake on my truck, i was wondering if a line lock would pass for a parking brake or if it had to be a factory style (i.e. you pull the handle to activate) i am still certified to do inspections (just barely since it was about 2 years ago that i took my safety class) but i dont do them anymore and cant remember what they told us in the class... in effect, a line lock does the same thing, just engages differently.... my guess is that if you tell the inspector about it, that it should pass, provided it works like a line lock should.... anyone have experience with this sort of thing specifically?

What is the most common "inspection procedure" for the parking brake? At most jiffy lube and similar "quality" institutions, I don't remember them ever setting a parking brake while in neutral and trying to move the vehicle. Do they simply pull the handle or step on the pedal, look for the light, then disengage and look for the light to go off? Aaron, you used to do inspections, what did you guys do?

i did inspections on bmw's... never had any problems with parking brakes on them.... if the handle clicked and felt firm i passed it- if i remembered to pull it.... not usually something i paid a lot of attention to honestly and it has been a while since i read up on the subject... i might just take it up there when they are really busy and see if they "overlook" it... anyone have a link to a pdf file of the inspections manual???

It must be mechanically separate. Line locks don't fly if they are following to the book.

Ha! I did while you lazy bastards bitched about wanting to go home. I got as much brake hardware off of it as possible. Not sure what all is left. I was planning on patching up my yota's parking brake assembly. It might not be possible, however without switching out the rear brakes. When the p.o. sent the rear axle sliding all the way under the transfer case, it did quite a bit of damage to the e-brake system. I might have to settle for a line lock and a typically "thorough" inspector. You're welcome to whatever.
