I am curious about the safety and emission inspections here in NC. I was under the impression that when a safety inspection is done they are also supposed to make sure the emission stuff is still there.
I did a little searching and the DOT webpage says nothing about it. http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/driver_services/drivershandbook/chapter7/vehicleInspection.html
It does say that vehicles newer than 25 years require an emission test in Forsyth county. My truck is 25 this year so does this mean I don't need to worry about the emission stuff anymore?
It is 3/4 ton and therefore did not come with Cats or EGR. My main reason for concern was my dream of a 500 Caddy swap.

you will be fine, safety inspections are pretty lax. put that 500 caddy in :driver:

As of last year, they no longer require emissions ("sniff") testing. It's done by OBDII now.
If your vehicle is pre-'96 (which yours is) then it is a safety inspection only.

I had always heard that they were required to do a visual inspection to make sure all the emissions equipment was still in place. The closest thing I can find in the manual is that the inspector is required to check the exhaust system.

I figured I would be ok but just want to make sure before I do anything.

Inspectors are supposed to look for emissions stuff, but a lot of them dont know what parts quailfy as emissions stuff.....

I don't think emmissions equipment is part of the safety inspection. They are supposed to check safety equipment; lights/horn/wipers/brakes/suspension/tires, usually its pretty slack, they just want your $9.

I do state inspections in NC and even a Safety Inspection we have to check out that the car has the emmissions equipment that it came with from the factory if it has been removed then we are supposed to fail it for inspection and the DMV is picky and they like to hand out those fines. I dont make enough money on a inspection to pass something that should not and take the risk of a $100 fine plus court cost it just not worth it to me.

well there's the answer to the original question, I was wrong. But I do know the state doesnt send out letters letting you know your safety inspection is expired...

What I meant was that the required "emissions test" that some counties require, and others don't, is no longer the case. County is irrelevant now, teh test is the same everywhere.
Yes, techniaclly emission equipment should still be in place. but thsi requires the tech to know what was OEM for every vehicle every year for 35 years back.

Last year when I got the 4Runenr inspected, he never even opened the hood...

No they dont send out the letters or the fines with the saftey they just get you when they pull you for speeding or a checkpoint but you could just take your chances and if you get a ticket get the car inspected before the court date and it will get droped
