Do you think NC4x4 should have an instant messenger set up for the forum

it would beat the hell outta sending pms back and forth every ten seconds!

No. The server can't support the load. There are several IRC-style chat add-ons that you can run with vBulletin, but they're unnecessarily server-intensive. I'm not sure if they're just badly written or what.

I'll gladly take a look at anything you guys find that might work, but just understand that we're already struggling to keep our resource consumption down.

Diesel,

Why not open an IRC channel and monitor it yourself? You could then post the address up. It's not like IRC's some sort of crazy new protocol.

J

I can do that. I have to dig the info out of my head. I sit in an IRC chat all the time for a game I mess with. Let me know if you want me to set it up.

yea set it up and give us the url
Working on it. I'm not sure on the url thing... have to do some research. I use MIRC chat software. It can be configured to go straight to it.

First you will need Mirc chat software:

http://www.mirc.com/get.html

server is

irc.cyanide-x.net (6667)

IF you have it or know how to use it the room is #NC4X4

Working on a help guide on how to set it up...

FYI, IRC is blocked on most corporate networks due to security concerns. The protocol traffic itself is blocked on my network. Something tied directly into the website would be ideal.

gotta stay logged in... Sombody's likely to show up.

Oh, and if you can't do ssh tunnelling, then well dunno what to do for ya...

J

BTW Mikey did the built-in chat room thing back in the early lat 90's early - 00's and it was very hit or miss and hard on the server. I think people used it for like 3 days and then complained that noone was on.

I can do SSH tunneling, but they pick up on the loopback connection. I the ssh session on my VM for a while but then they started complaining about me changing my proxy settings. :( So I bought an iPhone instead of getting fired.

Thats not the problem. I can tunnel just fine. They security here at work here detects everything I do. If I run the socks5 proxy local and use firefox to connect to the socks5 proxy Cisco security agent throws up a loopback connection alert. When I run the socks5 proxy on a VM and connect to it from my physical box, they notice me changing the proxy settings in firefox/IE and catch me on that. So then I installed the foxyproxy plugin and they picked up on that too because they detected new plugins. So I'm sorta screwed.

Wow. Umm I think you lost me. I know the game forums have java applets that route you to the chat rooms but don't know how they are done.

Do you have openssh and an sshd at home?

If so, rdp to a machine at home and run firefox there.

You could:

ssh -L 8889:<local ip, 192.168.0.2 or soemthing>:3389

rdesktop localhost -p 8889

Of course it is your own fault trying to use the internet with a windows box.

Not my fault, my employers fault. :)

I just use my iphone for everything I can't get to at work now. It's quick and convenient and doesn't leave my home systems with gaping holes asking to be stuffed.
