The following animated GIF is from the WebWheeling.com Tellico run that was two weeks ago. AFAIK I have never been in this situation. I don't know that I would react the same given the same time frame. Matt (getstucksome) managed to let off the brake and push in the clutch quickly. This animated GIF was taken from the video I was editing and while slown down for the GIF this whole situation was less than 2 seconds according to the original video timestamps. I hope that when in the same situation that my instincts will kick in because had Matt's not the situation would have ended up drastically different.

All that being said, what situation have you been in where your instincts kicked in and you did the right or wrong thing where that instinct makes the difference between nothing and something bad happening? Any pics?

matt likes to put himself in situations like that (ie. uwharrie he yelled my name i jumped outta my jeep and ran to hold his up)

Looks like SlickRock
Been there several times. It's just kinda an instinct that kicks in. I have saw it many times in others, sometimes, not such a good outcome.

We call him Peanut for a reason. I also think Matt took on the most carnage on that trip for a reason.

You are correct, it is indeed Slickrock. I try to keep myself out of those situations because I don't want to find out my instincts are wrong. I hope that when it happens I will make the right decision but I am not certain of it. I usually do but one never knows...

i have seen/been riding in rigs that used the clutch at just the last moment to sucessfully avoid rolling, and ive often wondered what i would do in that situation since my xj is an automatic, short of popping it into neutral, it is hard to acheive that same effect and get it to roll back quickly

LOL i was thinking same thing.... Id have run my buddy clean over for standing in front of me...

Honestly with a coil TJ i think thats half the problem in that spot.. Plus i think he could have gone up some more, at least until the left side started to lift off then hammer down.

But without being there who knows.. Its easy to armchair quarterback..

I run an auto and have the gate between nuetral and reverse cut out of my shifter. I can't count the number of saves I've had from throwing it in reverse quickly. I hate my turbo 350 because it is fluid presure controlled, the AW4 in my xj/mj was by far the best I've ever had because it is electronically controlled and shifts from drive to reverse very quickly without waiting on fluid pressure. A nice save is by far the best heart pounding feeling while wheeling, it's the rush that draws me to this hobby.

Here is one that happened to me.

We were hunting up in Modoc County in California and we were driving up this narrow dirt road that on the map it said went through. But the map did not tell us that there was a tree 3' in dia across the road. The road was cut in to the side of a steep hill. It was too narrow to turn around. So I turned left and drove up the hill so I could back down and turn around. Well when I backed down I realized I had no brakes. Thank GOD for the SM465 and granny gear. I let out the clutch and stalled it right about the time I was going off the side of the mountain my front wheels of my J200 were still on the road barley. I was able to start the engine in low gear and get back up on the road.

To me it looked like you just caught a little air. I looks like too me you would have been ok moving forward. I have done the clutch save a few times like everone else but nothing feels better than see 2-3 feet of air under your tire as you walk it up something. -Out

Expirience/having a good feel for what your vehicle is doing..... and having a cool head/ability to think under pressure was that persons asset. (Possibly dumb luck)

I think I would have rolled it......

hmm, technically not wheeling but my best evah, "stuntsta" move was on the interstate after HUGE snow storm, dropped off my brother at UNC.

On the way home, up to maybe 40mph on I-40 because they have plowed the lanes, come to a ramp and the far right lane plow went down the ramp, and left two lanes are clear but all of a sudden the lane I am in has 12+ inches of snow, YIKES, and I spin a 180...

(This is my old 72 GMC Jimmy) so now I am backwards doing xx mph looking out my windshield at the semi about to crush me cuz he cannot stop either...

I somewhere in there pop the auto from D up to Rev, gas it, whip the steering wheel into a turn, throwing me back in the right direction, dropping the shifter back to D and GUNNING it before the semi hits me..and I STILL dont want to know how close it was...

I remember as I am sliding backwards looking at that man dead in the eyes, we both knew it was gonna be ugly QUICK...

Never thought about it, just all pure gut, oh SHiskabob reaction....later I thought about if I would have hit a "dry" patch while sideways in either manuver I would have flipped like no bodys biz...

My "wheeling" moment was caught on video and mostly what you see is my left hand on the steering wheel and my right hand frantically grabbing for something ANYTHING on my right to hold onto, cuz I KNOW I am about to roll left. (I didn't but funny to watch/knowing the panic I felt)

Final one...Callantee, just past waterfall, road is going like normal and there is just a small little bump, but on the other side of it the road has washed out on the right side, BUG's front end pulls hard to right/to go over the cliff, I steer left hard and GUN it, ended up front tires up fairly high on the left side cliff climbing for dear life. Then getting on CB..SPOT!!! (Cuz I wasn't freakin MOVIN at that point man...had to do a "check" to see if I made a deposit in my shorts"

oh plz, that fool can't drive... anyone with a pair would have throttled on through or flopped trying.:flipoff2:

the most famous advice from Matt..."MORE SKINNY PEDAL!". nice drivin' there Mathew, but think if you rolled it you might have gotten a chance to re-work the cage:Rockon:. when are we going to Crackers Neck?
