I just bought a 2018 tag-a-long camper that I will be picking up Sunday. I have never owned a full size camper before, only pop-ups. Is insurance required in NC? I know it's not all that expensive, but I remember being told that my pop-up camper was actually covered under my auto policy, but that might have been a Michigan thing.

Not required, but if you wreck it or a tree falls on it, it may not be covered under your other policies.

I don't remember how it works exactly. I know my gooseneck trailer is on my auto policy, but what most people neglect to realize is cargo is NOT covered. Needless to say, my lawnmower, tractor, and excavator have/had their own policies. That may be a little different since it's living space. Might be covered under auto, but probably only when hooked to a vehicle, in tow. Probably not when it's set up and being used or sitting in your yard.

I'd call your insurance company and ask. Either way, I'd insure it unless you're good fronting the cost to replace it in the event @jeepinmatt gets near it with a match, a tree falls on it, it gets stolen, or it gets messed up in a storm.

Policy on our new camper is around $800 a year.
