Some of y'all may know... I have really unusual vision. Aside from EXTREMELY myopia (we're talking +18-19 D) I have astigmatism. I also have a nystagmus (eyes move back and forth) related to ocular albinism, for which I'm extremely lucky and the phenotypic expression is really mild. Have some uncorrectable blurriness from partially undifferentiated macula from the OA but its super small compared to most OA folks. Sort of won the genetic lottery on this combo.

Well lucky me, I also have developed cataracts. Apparently its not uncommon in severe myopes due to the abnormal axial length and lens distortion.
So tomorrow (Friday) I start my journey into cyborg and get the first of a new pair of intraocular lenses. SEcond one 2 weeks later, get to be a 1-eyed pirate in between.

Curious if anyone else has gone through this (or more likely a parent). They can mostly correct my nearsightedness which should be a pretty major step up after a lifetime of RGP contacts that don't breathe well and ridiculously thick glasses.... but I'm also gonna lose the ability to focus on things in depth... so we'll see how that plans out.

Wear the patch at night , use the drops as instructed and be amazed at “hd” vision. I did the above and have zero issues ther than one floater that pops up once in a while. It’s really nothing but wanted to mention it.
Where is your focus fixed at? Thats the part I'm most nervous about.
Mine is supposed to be at "close computer use", e.g. ~18", knowing I'll still need glasses for farther tasks.

The thing I'm really looking forward to is using normal safety glasses again, even if they have to be prescription for close work.

Had both done quite a while ago now. Onset diabetes thru the roof apparently accelerated the development of the cataracts. As you age you’ll need readers anyway - they don’t have a fix for that yet, so I went with distant vision for driving, gazing at whatever, shooting, etc and put up with glasses for close up things like phone, computer, tiny print on med bottles, etc. Some folks split the difference with one close, one far but I had some time between each eye and didn’t like the effect. Good luck. You’ll be amazed!

I did mine at 52. First, you will be amazed at how blue the sky is again.

I did the mono vision - right eye distance, left eye focus point just under arms length. I think left is around 20/50 or 20/60. Right was perfect, until I had the subsequent surgieries (don’t play rough with your dogs for a while!). Right is now about 20-40. Still OK (legal) to drive without glasses, but I have started wearing glasses mostly when driving or need to read something at a good distance. I never use reading glasses for books or computer.

My driving/distance glasses don’t correct my left eye. They only bring my right up to 20/20. So retain the monovision. It’s not a strong or difficult prescription (not progressive or anything) and I have had good luck buying online cheap glasses from Zenni.

I also was extremely nearsighted before. The one thing that I miss is the ability to take my glasses off, get something 4” away, and be able to clearly see/examine/read it. I can read tiny print at about 24”, but still occasionally use the magnifier app on my phone to make up for that.

I also had astigmatism. IIRC, they correctted some of it, but left some in, because he said it would really screw up my depth perception to take it all out.

Well the bad news is the anesthesiologist did her job flawlessly, and you all are still going to have to deal with me being alive.
The good news is nobody told me these sunglasses and eye covers were so sexy

When you come down for the G2G I’m expecting some Ray Charles level piano. Nothing less will suffice!!

I've already got the Ray Charles welding down pat, so sure, why not?

Holy smokes - I tried reading your opening post and got so lost in the big eyeball words that I tuned it out and skimmed down til I found a picture.

-shudder-

Anyways... Good to hear it went well.

My dad had both his eye's fixed for cataracts and loves his vision now.
