Ok so I'n new to the whole "paying etsimated taxes" bit, finishing up on my first year doing it.
I just realized I missed an estimated payment date (June 15)... soleby b/c the F-ing IRS has a looney date schedule for this.
There are 12 months in a year.
12 / 4 = 3. Therefore payments should be due every 3 months... right?
Nope. Aparently Spring quarter is shorter? Pay April 15, then again June 15 (2 months)??? why not July 15th? So the "quarter" lengths are 3 mo, 2 mo, 3 mo, 4 mo??? WTF is that all about? That's not "a quarter". it's 4 arbitrary devisions that add up to 12.
:poop:

I have never heard any kind of reasoning behind that.. and yes it is screwed up.

It's the IRS. Are you surprised it's screwed up?

Damnit, of all the people here I figured you'd have the answer.

now I KNOW it's looney.

The Wifes a CPA,

And she said you get an extra month in the beginning of the year, Because its hard to tell what you owe until your last years return is complete.

Maybe I am not asking her the your question correctly,If this is not what your looking for.

So is it

4/15
6/15
9/15
12/15

So 4 - 2 - 3 - 3

But the last one is 1/15 not 12/15...

4/15 then 6/15, then 9/15 and finally 1/15 of the following year.

Honestly, I probably could try to see if there is a rhyme or reason, the "extra month" at beginning of year sorta makes sense in that the individ return is not due until 4/15 and you would not "KNOW" how much to pay until then.

but logically, from there it SHOULD be the 15th day of the month after each quarter (4, 7, 10, 1)

The June and Sept dates are the wacky ones.

Sam

The reason is that taxes are due by april 15th. When they started making you prepay they didn't want to change that date.

Sam

your right, about the 1/15

but tthat has no relevance on making it 6/15 vs 7/15, and why the LAST section is 4 months (9/15 to 1/15) instead of 3.
