i have a BRAND NEW 2.5 YJ (94) motor and it is fully built sitting here at the shop. And i just bought a 97 TJ with 146xxx miles on it, but the engine is a little tired in it and knocks a bit, now the question is that is the YJ 4 cylinder engine the exact same as a TJ 4 cylinder? if not then whats the difference? i know there is a difference on the intake a little as the map sensor is on the TB instead of the firewall, but maybe i can JUST swap the long block? i could put the YJ long block in there with all the TJ accessories... all and any help would be muchly appreciated.

i think its all the same except for the intake and fuel rail if you want to sell it im really interesed ive been tryin to find one.

thanks for the reply, but no i am not going to sell it, i need them both, just wanted to see if i can swap out the TJ 4 cyl with the new YJ 4 cyl.

It is possible to swap out the engine but if it is to be registered and driven it is not legal. You cant put an older engine into a newer vehicle. You can put a newer engine in a older vehicle but not the other way around.

technically this old engine is brand new so it has less miles on it then the newer engine in the jeep. so actually i am putting a newer engine in an older jeep. ;) haha im just kidding but it does make sense in a way tho... but i still havent gotten an answer to my question if the YJ 2.5 is the exact same long block than the TJ 2.5 motor??? i just want to use the block with the internals and the head off the YJ and put the TJ manifolds on it with the accessories??? thanks alot.

so im guessing no one knows this ... so im just going to take a risk and rip out the TJ motor and compare it to the YJ ... then put the YJ long block in the TJ with the TJ manifolds,etc...

also i ran the part numbers on both the 94 and 97 2.5 4 cylinder motors and found out that the crankshaft, head gasket, cylinder head, timing chain, clutch, and oil filter are all the same part for both the YJ and TJ... thats enought info to show that it will actually work.
