Is there a tool for installing automotive studs?

I typically use the "tighten two bolts against each other" method but I've been doing it so much lately that if there was a way to make installing a stud as easy as installing a nut that I'd pay for it.

Any ideas?

These have threads on both sides. It seems like I keep having to mess with them. They look something like this:

There is such a thing. I've seen them on tool trucks. Try Sears.

Yes they do, but will most likely be called stud removers. KD makes the ones I have, and I'm very pleased with them. They are pretty gentle on the threads but if they are being stubborn they will flatten the threads. They have a variety of different sizes so make sure the kit has the size you need. If you were close you could borrow them, they don't get used much.

The poor man's approach, especially if you're doing a lot of studs of the same size, is to take a piece of hex stock, drill and tap it all the way through with the thread you need to install, and run a bolt down one end. Thread it onto the end of the stud, tighten the bolt against the top of the stud, and drive her home with a wrench on the bolt head. When you're done, if the device doesn't immediately loosen when you back off the bolt, you can put a pair of pliers on the tapped stock and loosen the bolt.

woody i'll have mine with me in harlin.
