Is this rod knock?

sounds like a rod knocking time for a sbc

sure sounds like it.
Once when I had my old bus I drove it to the car wash. After spraying it off, I cranked it and heard a knock. shut it off, checked the oil, all OK, cranked it back up, still knocked. Climbed up into the engine bay looking around, layed my hand on the breather, and it stopped! Come to find out it was the breather. It had lost the nut holding it on.

A quick tip:
Get you a long stick, put one end next to your ear, and the other to different places on the engine. You will be surprised to find out what you hear, and how well you can tell where it's coming from.

Something else that makes a noise like that is loose flex plate or Flywheel bolts. Also the Torque converter

If its not a diesel you got a bottom end problem. Probably the rod bearing disease.

just dont put the broom stick near the fan, then you will hear nothing for a while....uhhh I mean so I have hard, not that i would ever accidentally let a stick stuck to my ear hit the fan or anything...

well im kind of in a good position. I have a lifetime warranty on my bottom end. I put the reciept pics up before. I can take them again if needed. so i kind of do want to drive it until it blows. then just have them replace all the shit. instead of trying to scam me.

was it cold when making this noise?

22R/RE are notorious for piston slap when cold, which sounds much like that noise

drive it till it fraggs, it may take awhile

That doesn't sound like rod knock to me, when you raise the RPM of the motor IT should get faster and louder i did not hear it, baybe it was the video. could be your timing belt slapping around.

Didn't sound like it to me either, sounded more in the valve area, like a lifter/cam problem. But, it's a video, so who really knows. Run it by a shop and ask them to listen.

A long handled screwdriver works for this as well, without getting splinters in your ear. But like skyhik5 says, stay away from the fan. Not only does it scare the crap out of you, it makes you deaf in that ear!

At idle it does sound like rod knock, but like said earlier it should get faster/slower with the rpms.

When you rev it up, sound like something in the valvetrain/ a worn timing chain/guides.

The knocking noise at idle could be something simple such as a belt pulley. When you rev it up the torque of the motor "staigtens it out". It's a wild stab, but shit happens.

Nope wasnt cold I dont think. To me when it is quiet and i get my head real close to where it comes from, when i give it a little gas it sounds like the sound goes up with it.

i've seen loose/broken harmonic balancers cause that noise also, and usually just at idle. as has been mentioned, typically a rod knock will make a bunch of clatter throughout the rpm range. if i'm hearing correctly, your noise stops above idle.

Your flexplate and or torque converter might be loose if its and automatic and if its a manual it might be you clutch or flywheel. Easiest way to check that is pull the inspection cover and see if you can move those components easily without disturbing the engine

on my 93 I had a busted flexplate that made noise @ idle, eventually it broke enough to stop transmitting power
