Is this the proper way to conduct business?

First of all I would like to say this post has nothing to do with any member of NC4x4. My wife saw a Jeep she liked on craigslist. She emailed the seller this morning who called us back about 5:00 this evening. So, he wanted us to go ahead and ride out there to check his Jeep out. I told him that it would take me about an hour and 20 minutes to get there. I called one more time as I was pulling out of the driveway, just to confirm our arrangement. When we got about 15 minutes from his house, we called to tell him we would be there in 15, but no answer. Two minutes later, he called back to tell us that he just sold the Jeep to someone else. So, at this point we had wasted an hour of our time and $100 worth of fuel and he basically told us we were SOL. What happened to common courtesy? He called me and told me that he wanted me to come right away, so we jumped in the truck and left. When he told me he sold it out from under me, I kept my cool, but honestly I think I would have gotten more satisfaction if I had let him have it. Shit happens I guess.
 
I would have told the guy to hold on till u got there and started a bidding war.
 
If there was somebody else lined up, I would have told you up front that someone was coming to look. If it was someone that just stopped in, I would have called you immediately. Honestly though, regardless of where you were...outside of offering you a courtesy call, I would have taken the first cash in hand, nothing saying you would have bought the Jeep when you got there, and the other guy could have missed out on a sale. And what in the hell were you driving that it took $100 in fuel? Figure $4/gallon, means 25 gallons of fuel. Based on driving time, 150 miles round trip. Means 6mpg.

I was in my f250 with a 460, it gets about 8mpg give or take on my foot, and I was rounding it up with my beef jerky lol, and I was about 10 miles from him so lets say 140 miles round trip. The problem was I asked him if it was still going to be there when I got there, he said "yes", also told him I had cash in hand and ready to buy.. I know no deal is final with out cash in hand, but like you said If he had someone else lined up he should of told me and let me decide if I wanted to take the risk of going. At the end of the day I just wanted a courtesy call.
 
From a fellow Craigslister, take the cash from the first person that offers it. Like the fellow above, I tell folks the truth if someone else is coming to look at something (even though they probably don't believe me).
 
Makes me want to smack people so hard that thier Grandmother can feel it.
I am a little too old testament for my own good sometime. Eye for an Eye...Tooth for a tooth... Burning bag of fresh dog crap on your front porch while I video it and dare you to step out in the road to discuss it further.
 
Decomp, If it says first come first served or they tell you that other people are coming at the same time, I would agree with you. Shy of that you make the other guy wait a few mintutes. Its all good cause 2 buyers standing there keeps the price up.
 
Bunch of DB's on Craigs List. Same thing has happened to me, drove an hour to find someone loading the Jeep on a trailer, after the seller told me he would wait til I arrived.
 
I used to sell cars on the side, & learned, you could never believe the "I'm on the way"; "I will take it, don't let any one else get it", or anything the buyer says, till I got cash in hand! BUT, if I had there #, & or set time, they were to be there, I would never sell it out from under them! If I had been that close, I would have continued on, just to express my dis-pleasure, with him!:flipoff:
 
Pretty much a dick-move on his part......

I have been on the selling side with everything setup, title notorized, & appointment made only to get a bs text five hours later saying they didn't want the truck.

It takes all types I guess.....most people have decent morals - some have no clue.

Good thing is, there a ton of good Jeeps out there....good luck.
