Isn't BLACK supposed to always be ground?

I know some people get in and wire stuff up using whatever wire they have on hand. That's not what I'm talking about.

Shouldn't most manufacturers use black as ground in their harnesses and wiring?

I remember in computer school hearing BLACK IS ALWAYS GROUND. I have found this to be true 99% of the time.

HOWEVER. I was wiring up some new LED turn signals and thought "black is ground so I know what that wire is". Well black was not ground. I still don't know what it is because after that I did the ol trial and error until the lights worked.

Did something change? Maybe I wasn't aware of the "use whatever color wire you want standard".

Just wondering.

Depends on who made it....Most german cars brown is ground. There is no "rule of thumb" when it comes to automotive wiring colors. A test light or a wiring diagram is your friend.

re leds

Had the same experience myself - installed some 4" led tail lights on the rear of my CJ7 and was instructed that the WHITE wire was ground. Go figure. Guess when all else fails, read the directions. Got them from H.F. for $12./ea. - really bright compared to the stock lights. cutting the 4 1/2" hole in the sheetmetal was easier than thought.

Jeep Harness Light Function LED Harness

Purple/Black----->Backup light------------->N/A

Black/Yellow---->Tail light or Side marker--->Black

Green/Red---->Left Stop & Turn Signal----->Red

Brown/Red--->Right Stop & Turn Signal----->Red

Ground-------------------->White

This is how I wired mine up on my 98 TJ....

on canon copiers i believe blue is ground. unless its white. lol....point is...no, ground color is not standard.

front panel control wires on computer cases the ground is white. The ground for the front USB is black.

i just remembered, Your Hot Dog Guy has some wireless power wire adapters....i dont think you even need ground for those. Shoot him a PM and see what he charges for a set.

Always check its hard to tell who wired it up.
If the person wiring it was an electrician then the Black will be hot, White will be the ground. Low Voltage Guys (Like my self) will make Black or Green the ground.

Mike,
unless its in an attic and a 24 conductor...then all bets are off!!!
