I was out looking at some rigs the other day and i came across an isuzu trooper at my cousins dealership. It's a 1995 Model with 110,000 miles. It's really nice and clean and everything works. It has the 3.2L V6 engine and 5-Speed transmission. Test drove it and it runs and drives great. Engages 4WD fine also. I'm supposed to be going and picking it up tomorrow. I was wondering if these rigs had any capability offroad as compared to say an xj or wrangler or something. Also, will it be a good daily driver? Thanks for the help guys. I can't wait to go pick it up tomorrow! =)

yeah, they're great trucks all around. do decent off road in stock form, solid drivetrains, good platform to build from, make nice daily drivers, etc.

the only problem is the aftermarket isn't what you'll find for other vehicles, but it's a lot better than it used to be and it's growing. lockers, gears, lifts, body armor, etc. are all available though.

i've personally owned an 87, 89, 91, and a 96.

I have a pup pick-up and I have had a time finding non-aftermarket parts like the fuel sender/pick-up

One dealership in Wilson NC....

But I know a trooper with 347,000 miles and still wheelin' hard

alright thanks man. how do they do compared to XJs? all my friends have xjs and they think they're gods gift to the earth. i mean they do damn good but they're not ALL that!

Getting parts is a problem. I had one at the shop for 2 months waiting for an aftermarket clutch. Then 2 weeks waiting for a power steering pressure switch. Other than that it's a good truck minus the IFS.

Like its been said, Troopers are a bit more difficult to work with because of parts availability, and aftermarket support.

But I love em. I searched for a Gen 1 trooper well before I ended up with my Jeep, and would still rather have one, because I like the cargo room. If its a good deal, id say go for it.

I've got my XJ and my parents have a 2002 trooper (that just $%* the bed). Until the tranny blew it was a great truck. While not quite as capable as the XJ in stock form, if only because of the increased girth and IFS setup, it was still has plenty of traction, and is a comfortable and plenty capable rig. It was driven daily on long business trips and was generally very reliable and well built (the factory brake pads lasted past 100k). I'm trying to convince them to drop the D70 under it! (Do it John!)

i'd say a stock for stock an xj is going to do better.

check out www.4x4wire.com . it's about the best isuzu resource around.

get a landy. discovery Series I so the center diff locks. You can find them for the same price as troopers and the aftermarket is MUCH better.

I went and picked up the trooper today. I absolutely love it so far! What's the biggest sized tire you can fit on one of these things stock? I should have pics of it tomorrow when it's daylight out.

33's will fit stock. 35's will fit with the torsion bars cranked and 2" rear springs or spacers.

yep, matt's a great guy and gives awesome service in my experience. he sells a lot more than isuzu stuff now too.

we've also got darlington off road right here in nc who specializes in isuzu. i assume he's still in business, i haven't been in the isuzu scene for a little while.

there are a number of well built isuzus in the state also. most of them hang out on 4x4wire though.
