Jeep CJ5 steering issues

I have a 1977 Jeep CJ5 with a SOA. I used a drop pitman. The power steering pump and lines are new, the box is used. The power steering comes and goes. On the trail exspecially. When I loose power steering on the trail the fluid looks milky. It even builds up pressure and blows out the cap.

Will putting a new gear box help my issue or do have other problems?

Is the the output on a stock steering gear box 13/16. The steering box I have has a 13/16 knurl where the steering shaft attaches.

Thanks

Probably have some air in the system or water. I would drain it out and add new fluid. Once you get the new fluid in there you have to get the air out by jacking up the jeep and then while the jeep is running you have to turn the wheel lock to lock about 10 times.

You didn't mention tire size but you could also be overheating the fluid. I added a small cooler on the driver's side fender in line on the low side and it made all the difference in the world, but I am overworking mine and need hydro...

I agree, sounds like air & or water, if it's milky. Still running original stock pump on my 79-CJ-7, with 33s. Needs a cooler. I run fluid level at the ADD mark, so when it gets hot, it does'nt overflow. I run synthetic PS fluid & sure it has help it survive.

He's working tonight so I'll answer the questions. He has 35x12.5 tires and he also has a lunch box locker in the front. We have drained and refilled the fluid several times thinking it is water or air.

I believe the cooler idea may be the solution, the strange thing is I had the same exact lift and tires on my CJ5 and did not have any issues. Only difference was I used a Z bar instead of the drop pitman.

def add a cooler, mine did the same thing before i did the cooler.

Any advise on a doner for a cooler.

I know one said he mounted it to the fender. Anyone have pics where they mounted theirs.

Thanks
