I've been doing quite a bit of research on death wobble in order to cure my own problem with it. I've been slowly tightening and replacing various parts.

My wobble gets pretty severe at 40 mph in 2 wheel drive but is hardly noticeable in 4wheel drive. Anyone know why this is the case?

I had someone sit in the car and work the steering wheel back forth and didn't notice anything loose but there is some play in my tie rod heim joints

Just in case replacing those heim joints this weekend doesn't work, anyone know what else the problem may be? Theres no play in the drag link or track bar and the upper and lower control arms have all new bushings. There's also no play in the ball joints. I checked torque on everything as well.

Thanks

have u had the front end aligned lately or have u had the front tires checked for balance my cj had a very bad death wobble that i chased for a solution for a long time changed all kinda things ended up being the front 36 swampers wore outta balance a pound on one side and almost that on the other took a load of wheel weights to put it back in

Yeah my girlfriends XJ had the VICIOUS death wobble at 50+. Tires got bald so i decided to get new tires and an alignment. The new tires cured it. Seems the front tires were out of balance. An alignment was my next step. Good luck curing your Death wobble.

if your tie-rod has play in it then your tow is off. The tollerance for a TJ is 1/16-1/8" tow in. If you have 1/16" of play it could throw your tow off enough to cause a shimmy and possibly the DW you are experiencing.

Your case sounds like a bad alignment or wheel balance. These issues normally appear around 40-45 mph.

sounds stupid but tire pressure can be important. my brother ran had wj with 5 inches 31s at 50 psi for gas mileage. he had terrible death wobble for about a month and no one could cure his death wobble till i checked his tire pressure. not even a shimmy anymore
