I have an '81 J10 with the 258 and muncie 4-speed, it also have very low gears in the axles, I dont know what the axle gears are since there are no tags on them. My question is, I have a camper that is about 4000 that I would like to tow, and I am not sure if the truck is up to it. I have ungraded to a Offy dual plane intake manifold and 500 cfm Edelbrock 4bbl carb. The truck runs great, and I know I have put 1100 pounds in the bed and it pulled just fine. But I am trying to relate poundage in the bed to tow weight, before I just hook and go. Any body with any experience on something like this, I would like to hear your input, thanks.

yes it should pull it, problem is stopping as long as the camper has brakes shouldn't be an issue other than the horrible gas mileage. mine has a 360 and I hauled some trailers around with it before I went soa

Agreed. Just do not expect it to cruise at 80 on the freeway or get decent fuel mileage towing that. Wind resistance is a bugger and will work that truck pretty good. Make sure you are using a weight distribution hitch as well.

I towed with a 79 J truck for years, 304 and a T-18 four speed. Hills were slow, pick a good RPM and stay there. Trailer brakes are paramount, otherwise first time you have to stop it, the truck will slide and trailer will push you, or, jack knife. Truck may run pretty how on the hills too, keep an eye on temp. As far as towing ride height, I went redneck and added some leaves in the rear. Level while towing, but looked "Jacked up" when not.
