So I need to give a little back story. For around 6 months my XJ(98) had a shifting problem that no one could figure out. It would have no power of the line almost like it was trying to start in 2nd or 3rd. I would have to put the damn thing at 3k just to get it to move. Finally I took it to Jeep and turned out it was a wire that sent info from the auto tranny to the CPU that was shorting out and cuasing shift issues. Well today I got gas and when I tried to crank in and didnt do anything. I had the do the trick where you push the shifter up while in park and turn the key to start it. Runs fine now, but should I open it up and check the wires, take it back to Jeep, or say fuck it and have a beer.

If you had to push the shifter a certain way to get it to start, it sounds like your NSS (neutral safety switch) needs to be adjusted. It's not extremely hard from what I've heard.

NSS Adjustment

Check that out. Just scroll down to the bottom of the page.
