Ok so im getting ready to paint a jeep tub while i got it off the frame. I have read that you can apply an enamel paint over a lacquer paint but not vs versa. Well the tub has the factory white paint "in really good shape" and im wanting to use the duplicolor paint shop lacquer paint because i can get it really cheap through a friend. So my questions are is there a primer that can be applied over the enamel to allow me to spray lacquer over it or does anyone know of a paint stripper that actually works.

Thank
Brett

okay first it more than likely is a urethane factory paint unless it is an old jeep in which case it would be laquer second if it were me i would not use the duplicolor laquer it does not shine and is pretty much like spray paint and if you ever decide to really paint it the laquer may give you trouble wrinkling etc now you can get base clear or even a good enamel from a automotive paint store for probably not much more than the duplicolor and even if it is more its best to do it once do it right especially with paint but if you do decide to paint it with the duplicolor you should be able to sand it down with 320-400 grit wet or dry no primer should be needed as long as theres no bodywork and the factory paint is in good shape just sand clean and shoot it will not shine unless buffed and even then shine wont last i would buy a quart of good enamel before laquer any day much more durable and will shine as good as base clear if applied properly just my .02 hope it helps

Ok cool, my only concern with enamel is having to mix/thin where as duplicolor is ready to spray right out of the box. My question would be are the chemicals in the laquer going to make the factory enamel paint bubble? The tub is off a yj so i assume it is enamel and its painted white now and im wanting to go with a hunter/dark green, if i could find some enamel paint that i can spray and understand how to mix/thin..then i would much rather go that route. I have painted a few times but always with a laquer paint never enamel so any advice on enamels would be great.

the laquer SHOULDNT make the old paint bubble but you cant be sure because its two different chemicals enamel is usually a simple 8to1 mix which is 8 parts enamel to 1 part hardener/activator if you dont have a mixing stick just make one with a wooden paint paddle mark out 9 equal lines then fill cup to the eigth mark with paint and top the last line off with hardener you can add a splash of reducer if you like but not critical stir it up and shoot make sure to clean all equipment when done the paint will harden good luck:beer:
