Got a used set of KC lights and can't keep them from blowing fuses...I believe they are wired up right and they are wired to a katawba (sp) switch. When you turn them on or off each time it blows a fuse and I have used everything up to a 50 watt fuse. Anyone have any ideas what i can do to get these things working???

I would not go up in fuses as if you go to high you will damage more than a fuse. Check you wiring over again and make sure none of the wires are touch other wires that can carry larger currents. It has somthing to do with the wires either too close to other wires or the wires are grounding out or the wires are wrong.

Check the wiring closely for a fray or nick that could be grounding out. Also, if you are using any of the previous owners wiring, you might want to cut it all off and start over from the ground and hot wires on the lights.

Get a meter and ohm the switch too. Something else. if the wires have been pulled the connections inside the light may be grounding out. As said before, DON'T go up in fuse size!

Jeepercreature...do you know how they are suppoused to be wired up? If it should be from light to battery then from battery to fuse then from fuse to switch...or is there something different. That's they way I have been doing it cause that's what the guy told me when I bought them.

I've done what they said to do which was to run one wire to the battery and then the other to the fuse, then another to the katawba (sp) switch. And it's all gounded, but when u turn them on or turn them off they blow fuse.

If it blows immediatly, Most likely you have a nicked wire touching somewhere.

if you are using any of the previous owners wiring, you might want to cut it all off and start over from the ground and hot wires on the lights.

Been there done that before. It's worth the effort. Wire was too thin to support 4 lights, it got really warm and would pop a fuse after 10 minutes or so.. I guess the guy ran out of red wire and connected red to green. This was under the plastic wire flex hose stuff. I ripped the shit out and started over, which didn't really take long.

Keep an eye on your meter while a buddy moves/shakes the wire in places where you think it could be nicked.

If it blows right away, you've got a direct short. I.E. the power goes directly to ground before the load, (lights). It's in the wiring somewhere, right up to the light bulb in the housing. You may have to take apart the lights to check in there.

It SHOULD NOT go from light to battery !!! Make sure you got a good ground and wire positive from battery through a fuse to switch to lights

I had the same problem with my 4 kc. The wires where to small and I put 10 gauge wire and two relays for the 4 lights and 2 switches in the cab with fuses.. Its the wires and it's best to run a relay to keep the amps down... Its a pain in the a$$.

You have them wired wrong.

They should go:(if you aren't going to use a relay,**if you like your truck non-charred, I would use one**)

+ wire to power source ( battery, fuse box, etc. through fuse)
There should be a switch inline to turn it off and on.

- wire to sturdy, clean ground point on the body/frame

If you decide to put in a relay, ( hint, hint...) ask again and I will make up a wiring diagram for you.
