Keep the spare tire or not?

I am planning on putting an aluminum fuel cell under the spare tire, but was originally intending to take the spare off completely and leave it on the tow rig. I am now running 38.5x14.50 SX's, so I am not really concerned about slicing a tire, and if it comes off the (inner) bead, I have a compressor to air them back up. I am thinking about just leaving it on the tow rig to save weight and it would also give me more room for a fuel cell.

Suggestions? Leave it on the truck or take it off?

I'd keep it. I would fab a mount for the spare that allowed me to quickly remove it or replace it as the trails called for.

I built the rear of my truck with the capability of carrying a 40" spare since I run 42's. It is a heavy luxury to have. I cut a four inch hole in the side of one of my 36" TSL's on a rock in the Kodak rock area though a while back, so I am mildly paranoid about getting several miles back in the woods from the trailer with no spare. We will see how it goes. I may end up changing to the leave with tow rig/trailer option.

Are you willing to drive back to camp on a flat, thereby trashing the tire for sure? If not, keep the spare, or bring a boot, tube, stuff to stitch the tire, etc...

I like the tube idea. I think I will just buy a tube and if I slice one, bust it off the back bead and stick the tube in it. That would save over 100lbs off my truck.

One caveat to that.. If/when you cut the tire, you very well may not be in the position to repair that tire until it's done for..
