I know there are mostly 4x4 techies out here, but deep down, we are also a bunch of computer nerds! What are some tips on caring for a laptop battery? I've looked up some stuff and seen that they tell you to not let it stay plugged in all day long if you are going to continuously use it. It is "recommended" to charge the battery and then remove it from the laptop to avoid "trickle charging" it (it runs down a little bit, then charges, then runs down a little, etc. etc). What are thoughts on this and what tips do you have?

I heard no matter how well you maintain them that you can only expect a bout two years of peak performance out of them.

There's not much you can do. I just leave mine plugged up all the time. I can unplug it and it lasts 30 min tops.. Even when it was new it didn't even last an hour.

The recommmeded method is just what you have said to let it fully charge and then remove it if you are just going to leave the laptop plugged in all the time. Also once it is fully charaged you need to run it fully dead and then charge it backup up. It is the half using and then charging or people that leave it in the computer all the time that will see the shortest life on there battery. I have had my battery in my laptop and when I first got it, it would last almost 2 hours with doing just general word processing and web surfin. I do what is recommeded and my laptop is 4 years old and it still last about an hour and a half.

mine lasts about 15-20 minutes, lol. it's from my company, but personal use is allowed also so i can't complain.

There is a test you can Do

Take your suspect bad battery and drop it in a bucket of water. if it floats then it is still good. That test works for most electronic devices.

Really it is best to let them drain down and recharge. but leaving them on allways will not hurt them. leaving them dead will cause problems

Speaking of batteries Carl, you got any more of those UPS cells you were peddeling a few months back ?

I beleive my UPS is in need of some replacement cells, so now would be time for an upgrade.

seems the power dipped today with all the wind and my UPS just stopped working all together, even resetting the breaker was a no go.

Guess soon as I can get a new DVOM I'll check it out and see what the real deal is.
