Leaky steering box questions on Toyota IFS box

Just got my steering back together today, and got the truck outside for the first time in about a month and a half. I had taken the IFS box I had off, because the sector shaft was twisted. I bought a box from someone on the board, took it apart, drilled/tapped it for hydro assist. Plugged the holes, put it all back together, now it leaks out of the top plate. The plate I am referring to is the one with 4 bolts, holding the sector shaft in. Is there and specific reason it might leak? I am guessing maybe a little trash might not be letting it get a perfect seal. When I took the box apart it did not have a gasket or silicone, but maybe I should put some silicone on it?

Either way this sucks, new ATF,all that work and now I have to take it all back out.... It does seem to turn better now though (no hydro assist yet, I just plugged the holes).

Thanks for any suggestions.

Are you sure that you didnt pitch the o-ring when you were reinstalling it. The only one i have had leak on me was when i re-installed in and cut the o-ring in haft.

I took it apart, cleaned it up, put some gasket crap around the top, re-installed (let the gasket stuff setup first). Well, I drove it around for a bit, but it LOOKS like it may be leaking, definetly not as bad as it was though (yet). Where would I be able to get a new o-ring? I have another steering box I could rob one out of if need be. Also, how would be the best way of re-installing it to keep from cutting the o-ring? I can't get the sector shaft to go down in the box w/o beating it in, any suggestions?

Thanks

I always oil the o-ring and machined area up nicely before sliding them together. You shouldnt need any gasket marker to seal the box. Because of the pressure in the system....i dont believe that will last long.

If the box is out of your truck...just take the vin# to the toyota dealer and they can order you several different seal kits for the Box or you can order just that O-ring. You could rob one from another box...but unless you have one that is trash for some reason... i would just order a new one. the reason they will ask you for a vin # is because there are a few minor difference in years....that piticular o-ring should matter...

Holy old thread revival Batman!

Over the weekend I added hydro assist to @thebrotherinlaw's 4Runner. As luck would have it, at 5 o'clock on a holiday when he drove it to my shop and had to drive it home, his steering box started to leak after disassembling it to drill and tap the box. The o-ring that seals the pitman shaft top cover to the box itself had torn upon reassembly.

We didn't have any luck finding a vehicle specific seal kit so I started digging through my spare parts/leftover from my dealership days/parts bin.
I found what appeared to be the correct sized o-ring. A cam sensor o-ring for a Chrysler 2.0 and 2.4 liter 4 cylinder fit perfectly! We reassembled and recheck with complete success!

Figured I'd pass this along to you Yoter guys out there who may need one in a pinch.
