LED Blinkers now no left flasher

I swapped out my turn signals with LEDs. I also swapped the blinker module.

When I tried out the driver blinker, the front LED smoked like crazy and the rear does not work. The passenger side works fine.

I pulled the LED and replaced with an old bulb and the front works fine, the rear still doesn't work with either LED or old bulb.

The emergency lights don't work either. When there is an LED in the front driver and the blinker is turned on, the dashboard blinker light only comes on half way and never blinks.

Any ideas?

Edit-------------------------------

Now all the LEDs come on, but the left side will not blink. The right side blinks just fine.

At 1:21 I apply the driver blinker. It dims the running light, but doesn't blink.

Someone posted on PBB about a similar issue the suggestion was to try the LED flasher with the ground lead on it vs the regular 2 prong replacement style.

Maybe incorrect flasher? I had similar problem when changing to electronic flasher to slow down the blinking when I added tube bed with different rear lights.

I had done some research and put the flasher everyone said to use. For some reason I could not get the lights to work right.

Send me a pm. May be able to stop by to help this weekend

Again, not arguing, just playing devil's advocate. If the flasher were wrong, wouldn't the passenger side be effected the same as the driver side?

Not all prong configurations are the same on flashers. Seems like mine had something similar and pretty screwy. Is the emergency flasher and turn signal flasher separate units or work off the same? Did everything work properly before the bulb and flasher change out? Maybe a melted wire in the process? Just guessing right now.

Things did work before and if I put an old bulb back in the driver front, it flashes. Thanks for guessing, I ran out of guesses last night.

NP. Normally there is a seperate 4 way/emergency flasher, and turn signal flasher.

The light bulb has X amount of resistance combined with all parts of that circuit. Including other light bulbs (side markers etc) and wiring etc.. That resistance causes X amount of current to flow (@~12v). In the older blinkers this current flow heated up a bimetalic switch that opened/closes when in use... A different amount of resistance causes different current flow and a different amount of time to heat up the blinker for it to blink...

A LED (unit) can draw very little current and in some cases not enough to make the blinker work. It is very possible that the LED units on each side or the wiring length difference of each of sufficiently different enough to make it work or not. Factor in any resistance change due to heat who knows... Even an aftermarket blinker may not sense the led properly you may be at the edge where its sorta working but not all the time...

The problem really is your replacing old simple electro mechanical devices with newer electronic stuff...

The old stuff didn't need a dedicated ground as it simply got hot and opened up. The new electronic blinker may need a dedicated ground to properly sense the current draw. Otherwise its like touching an electric fence while you jump in the air...

Make sense :D

Went by there today and took a look at the problem. Came to find out that it was a 2 prong flasher instead of 3 like I was thinking so not much chance it could be wrong.

Put original flasher in with all LED's on left and they don't flash. Replace with one original bulb and left side blinks front and rear. Replace with electronic flasher and they work. Right side was always working because the rear still had original bulbs.

Sooo, with all LED"s installed back in left side there just isn't enough draw to make them blink, even with the new electronic flasher.

He'll either need to install resistors or go with the 2 prong flasher w/ ground like Yager mentioned earlier.

Got there around lunch time and it starts friggin snowing like crazy. About 20min later it's sun shine again.

I figured I would give a little update.

Got everything working except brakes + running lights + blinker. If all three are applied, the light doesn't flash. After brake has been applied, blinker won't work anymore until XJ is restarted.

Chris, did you get all those links I pm'd you?

Yes I pointed this out earlier.... but noooooooo, you probably didn't listen to (or read) half of my advice.... You must have been talking with my wife lately... :flipoff2: glad you got it fixed...

This is worse on some vehicles as they are not really located near each other. Easy way to find them is turn the blinker/4way on and listen for it under the dash..
