Curious if anybody else got a letter from DOT today?

The division recently reviewed it's vehicle registration records and determined that you may have a vehicle(s) currently registered in this state which meets one or more of the following FEDERAL MOTOR CARRIER SAFETY ADMINISTRATIONS requirements to obtain a USDOT number:
-Vehicles that are over 10k pounds,
-If you transport between 9 & 15 passengers (including driver) for compensation,
-If you haul more than 16 passengers, or
-Haul hazardous materials

Just trying to figure out which of my vehicles even comes remotely close to these requirements! :shaking: Wifes Kia van has gotta be the one!

A lot of guys I know with duallys have recieved them. I got one for our plant truck as well.

The front page says:
"PRIVATE US DOT NUMBER
If you will haul your own property, perform a service, or have a personal hobby that
generates revenue with a vehicle or combination of vehicles that exceeds 10,000 lbs GVW."

This is how it always has been. Up in PA/NY they have been targeting circle track guys heavily the past few years. They say because they race for prize money, they are a business etc.. (even if you have net losses) To which this is why so many now haul in enclosed unmarked trailers.

But since we don't win anything.... hopefully this won't apply.

The other thing is what makes a buggy a vehicle ? if its not road legal it might as well be a tractor or lawn mower.

Enforcing it under that rule in PA/NY would have me (not that I race) writing off all of my expenses as a business loss and become a revenue reducer for them.

A HUGE help to keep from being a target,

DO NOT plaster your truck/rig with stickers of any sort, they are advertising and also a form of "contingency earnings" in many motorsports. the burdon of proof is on YOU to prove whether you are competing for money or just a recreational user.

yep, stickers are cool, and add HP, but it's one of the things they look for

Horse folks, you are screwed, most horse hauling vehicles are hauling to and from shows or some other competition, there fore, again YOU either comply, or PROVE you are using for recreational use.

That's what I figured. I'll be harassing the NCDMV "Title & License Unit" in the AM...

From Jim's 1st link:
If you generate revenue by transporting your own property, property of others (for-hire), perform a service that is relative to your business or
have personal hobby that involves the use of a vehicle or combination of vehicles that has a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of more then
10,000 lbs. You are considered a Motor Carrier and you will need a Us Dot Number.

Appears it doesn't matter that if "revenues" are gained...@#$%! greedy bastages!

I'm registered at 17k....no letter today. I've just been reading up on this, looks like it's gonna be a pain if we gotta go that route...wonder how far they'll take it? Will private vehicles not for hire be subject to hours of service requirements? safety compliance audits? make us hit the weigh stations? paint the dot number on the side of our private-not-for-hire pickups? random drug/alcohol testing?

I don't like this. :(

This only applies to individuals/businesses crossing state boundaries engaged in trade, traffic, or transportation of goods, property and passengers. This also includes vehicles transporting hazardous materials within this state.

A USDOT number is required for carriers participating in interstate commerce and the division must record the number in its database.

i hate the way this is worded.

so if we are >10k and we cross a state line we need a USDOT number even if its not for profit?

its going to suck if we have to start carrying logbooks. That definitely puts a damper on my scooting around for 4 hours and then the 10 hour drive up to PA to wheel.

So IF we have to have USDOT number, AND logbook, then in the future are we going to have to stop at weight stations when crossing the state borders? Even if we are not traveling for business.

Pops is going to be pissed if he has to change stuff for work. He grosses 11-12k on a daily basis w/ his 2500 suburban for work towing the enclosed trailer, and the suburban FULL of tools.

So it looks like getting a number is free, but IF there were implications of log books and weigh stations this could suck major ass, or at the least be very inconvenient.

Caver, do you have weighted tags on your tow rig?? I didn't receive the letter, but i have been laying low with a standard 6000 lb truck tag on the dodge. I really do need to get on the ball about getting a properly rated tag, but just cant bring myself to do it because I am looking at having the rig down for a long build very soon.

Didn't get the mail last night but I would guess it is based on the combo of "TRUCK" designation in your registration and weighted tags.

(Think of this from a programming standpoint, + TRUCK, +WEIGHTED TAG, +Trailer tag?)

Yeah that will suck if we have to follow logbooks stds, etc for a hobby, but I think it still says if the hobby generates cash in your letter?

Rockmafia's two links have one important contradiction, that Caver already pointed out.

Hobby that grosses over 10k, crosses state lines and generates revenue.
vs.
Hobby that grosses over 10k and crosses state lines.

If North Carolina omitted the revenue generating aspect then we need to know why. It's no secret that the NCDOT is in a budget crisis. You've all heard about toll roads, fees charged per mile driven and turning 5,000+ miles of state road over to the Towns and Cities. These are all possibilities that are being discussed right now. The USDOT # may be free now, but there will likely be a "processing fee" or some such nonsense tacked on by the state.

i got one yesterday and went to their website. i have a dually registered at 26,000lbs.
the website is www.fmcsa.dot.gov
go to the registration and licensing and follow the instructions. they have a little test you can do to see if you need a dot number. i went through it and found that i need one but i am going to avoid it for now. i do not have to haul any equipment across state lines.

I went and looked for the questionnaire that bottomland mentioned and i think i found what he was taking about. The thing is the very first statement disqualifies it for me, when it says:

"Where is your company headquarters located?"

There is no option for those of us who are not a company.

When I was working in the field (industrial construction), we had DOT numbers on our F350 trucks. My truck was about 17K by itself without a trailer. we NEVER stopped at weigh stations, etc and never had any problems.

When I was pulled over by a NC state Trooper in Canton a few years back, I was driving my Bus, pulling my Jeep. Bus had regular tags. I was pulled for being a nuisance. His comment was' " Well, a recreational vehicle, pulling a recreational vehicle, you folks stay safe and don't let them run you over"

Yeah, and then it talks about "...company vehicle..."

I call the number on the form
it said " if this is you personal truck and you do not use it for comercial purposes you do not need A DOT number"

This is going to suck for people like my family. We go camping often with a 14,000lb 5th wheel camper along with several others in our group. We have weighted tags on the truck and tags for the camper but if we have to start keeping a log book and going into weigh stations. Might cause us to sell the camper. Not to mention we fall into the traveling across state lines category.
