Hi guys, I'm seriously getting ready to get a new truck. Pricing 2011 Tacoma 4x4's. (selling my 1992 toyota and my 2008 Sierra 2500hd duramax....posted in classifieds). Anyway, I'm thinking about buying a truck this weekend or first of next week. I want to lift it enough to put 33x12.50's on it, and look good, but not go so high my wife can't get in it. What is a good lift, easy to install for someone that has a lift and is mechanically minded? I'm thinking around 4", how does that sound?

Also, I'm a wheel idiot, what do you guys recommend for backspacing and offset? I'm thinking 16x8's, but that's as far as I know. On my duramax, I put 20x10's on it and fudged up on the backspacing and my tires rubbed my control arms just slightly. I want wheels spaced out just enough to clear 33x12.50's, but not stick out any farther than they have to. I don't want to sling crap all over the side of the truck any more than necessary. Wheels I can figure out I guess from a tire place if no one has any input, but the lift thing frustrates me. Any ideas?

Thanks guys.

To clear 33x12.50's, you're going to want either a 6" drop-bracket lift or some serious work with a saw and a 3" lift. Also, with a 12.5" tire, it will be outside the fender (or very close to it) regardless of what you do.
I have the Old Man Emu lift on mine with the 886 front springs (heavy duty) and Dakar rear leafs, and I'm running 255x75x17 (32x10.50) BFG MT's on stock wheels. I didn't trim anything, but I am rubbing slightly on the LCA's at full lock. To go bigger or wider, I'd have to have wheels spacers or aftermarket wheels with different backspacing, and trim some of the wheelwell.
The clearance issues up front are the UCA's and the cab mount at the rear of the front wheelwell. I can't fit my fingers between the UCA and the tire as my truck is now.
Everyone swears by adjustable coilovers, but I can't justify a grand for those on my mostly highway truck. That's why I went with OME for the lift. I had the Bilstein 5100 adjustable height shocks with my factory coils. I decided to upgrade when I put the ARB bumper and winch on.
If you need to know more, feel free to PM me or send me your # and I can tell you all about them.
Here's a pic of mine as it sat before the OME lift. Really not much different from now, but just slightly shorter.

maulcruiser, looks good. Thanks for the replies. If it's not too much trouble, can you post a pic of it from the side?

Another question....if I buy this truck, what would the stock wheels and tires be worth? I think they are the 17" wheels, but not sure of brand of tire. I'll immediately pull them off, so I doubt they have 150 miles on them. I want to lift it and put aftermarket wheels and tires.

That leads to next subject: Can you guys post pics of aftermarket wheels and tires on your new body style tacomas? Preferably 16-18" wheels and 33-35" tires. I'll go no bigger than that. Thanks again!

If you get the standard 4x4, it will have 16" steel wheels. PreRunner's and TRD Off Road's get the 16" "snowflake" alloy wheels, TRD Sport's get the 17" 5 spokes. Rugged Trail and that other joke of a package TRD get the 16" black alloys.
My current wheels came off of a 4Runner or TRD Sport Tacoma (same wheel), but I originally had the snowflake wheels. These got painted black because I hated the silver/polished look.
All PreRunner's come with street tires, TRD Off Road's come with BFG Rugged Trails (GARBAGE!), Sport's come with Bridgestone street tires, and those other packages come with BFG All-Terrains I think.
Take-offs will probably net you $400-600. Depending on which wheels you get and if they're priced right, I might want them.

And here's mine from the side. Oh, and this shot is with the OME kit.

Thank you very. That looks like the look I want. I put a deposit on the truck yesterday over the phone. I'll try to go get it Monday or Tuesday depending on work. It's about 2 hours away. The spec sheet the dealer faxed to me says : 17" alloy wheels with P265/65/17 Tires. No idea what brand. The truck is Magnetic Gray, so I figure on Black wheels would look best, or black/chrome combination. Anyway, I guess when I get it, I'll post the wheels and tires in the classified section.

Off subject, I came to the Wilmington Fire Department a few years back to buy a transfer case from one of the firemen there. There may be more than one fire department there I'm sure, but seems like a small world to me. Thanks again!

Try the Tacoma World forum. I was a member when I had my 2010 Tacoma TRD Off Road. A lot of good info there. Keep in mind that IFS trucks get real $$$ fast when it comes to lifts especially if you are going over 3".

I know. Figuring that out. And I've been looking at that forum as well for the past few days.

Nobody ever answered my last question I don't think....any idea what those stock wheels and tires are worth when I take them off???

I sold the 5 BFG Rugged Trails for $400 on Craigslist, just the rubber, I kept the wheels. They had about 1500 miles on them.

that makes me sick. I sold 4 brand new alloy wheels and brand new tires off my 2008 duramax for $550. Had 400 miles on them. Think $700 is fair for the toyota ones, or a little less?

Before you sell the wheels, TAKE THE TPMS SENSORS OUT!!! At $120 a piece, you will regret it later. Also, sensors for an aluminum wheel will not fit a steel wheel and vice versa.

Not trying to be an ass, but if you ask $700 for tires and wheels, you will be sitting on them a while. I can pick up about four sets of factory wheels for $100 a set right now. The tires are where the real value is. Even if you traded them in at a tire shop, they would only give you about $60-80 per tire.

Congrats on your new Sport Tacoma! I'm sure you will like it! I just hope you got the automatic transmission...

Thanks for the heads up. I did get the truck a little while ago. Just got home about 20 minutes ago. It is the automatic. I had no idea what to ask for the wheels and tires. I sold my factory ones off the duramax for $550 I think, but they were 16's and little doughnut tires. I'll take whatever's reasonable. I got home and they've got 112 miles on them right now. I'd like to put a lift and new wheels and tires on next week after the holiday. Probably not drive it much at all until I do. Thanks again...and no offense taken.

PICS!!!!!!

I have an 05 trd sport with 3 in leveling kit and 2 in blocks in the back. I had to trim the inner fenders quite a bit but I can clear 33's with 1.5" wheel spacers and stock wheels.

I had an 07 Tacoma with OME front shocks and springs, and Dakar rear leaf springs. No blocks no spacers, with the this set-up the truck handled awesome on and off road.

Pitbullcruiser, that looks really good. I assume you don't have any rubbing because of that front bumper, but do you think they would rub if I left the factory bumper on? Oh, and I guess I need to ask what size tires you have? And how wide are your wheels and what is the backspacing? If you don't mind, I appreciate the help.

I've been set on a 6" and 35's, but I like the looks of yours. My 5'4" wife can still get in that I bet.
