Link Fab question

Building some links, 1020 DOM 1.500 x .120 wall, about 20" tube length. Should I drill a hole and plug weld? Is Mig suitable here?

Yes, plug weld and weld the butt joint. Thread a joint or bolt into the bung to prevent distortion of the threads.

120 wall is too thin for anything that might touch the ground, probably fine for uppers or car links.

Cover the joint or bolt in antiseize before welding.

Weld it up, quickly unscrew joint or bolt, drop the joint into water to cool.

Definitely drill and plug weld. Don’t drill thru both sides of tubing at same location. Drill them at different distances from the end of the tube.

I prefer gtaw...or smaw. If I can't roll it out I do it in horizontal.

Why? Is that to reduce the stress in the tube in a straight line for the plug welds?

Yeah, to reduce the possibility of the tube tearing between the plug welds.

Why? Is that to reduce the stress in the tube in a straight line for the plug welds?

Yep, the goal to create the most non linear heat affected zone boundary.

If you don’t plug weld, the HAZ is an even distance from the end of the tube, all the way around.

This creates a stress riser that can lead to the tube shearing at the haz boundary.

Plug welds move the HAZ to differing areas around the tube. (Think more like a sine wave around the tube, vs a straight line around the tube)

It's not a theoretical thing, either. I've seen the bungs tear right out.

Nobody likes it when their bung hole gets torn out.....
Beat me to it.

Monday morning:

Him: "So how was the weekend on the trails?"

Me: "Was going great until I ripped out my bung hole..."

Him: ….awkward silence..."wow, um... I've...uh, ...gotta go stand over here now."
