Living close to power lines?

What are your thoughts on this? My wife and I looked at a house today that has some high voltage lines going through the back of the property. The corner of the house closest to them is about 160' across the ground to the closest line.

Aesthetically you really can't see them because of the trees around the house.

My wife is all freaked out about EMF and stuff. I know there is no evidence to go either way, but her being in a healthcare profession she is all freaked.

I think it is safe. What do you guys think?
 
A good friend lives under the powerlines. No problems.
 
We üsed to, after moving the wife's migraines decreased significantly.

Can't tie it directly to that of course, but I personally woudnt again.

I spend enough time in medium voltage switchgear as is I don't want to sleep under it.

Who cares what she says...what about the opinions of your internet friends!?!?! Wives are temporary, but the internet is forever!

For the right deal, I would live near HV lines, but definitely wouldn't want to be directly under them.

I may have been jaded by the 6-acres and the 24x30 shop with a full upstairs. I really like log cabins too, but she didn't want it.

We have two small kids (6 and almost 3) and there was a nasty pool there, so that would have to go as well because I don't want that with small kids.

House also needed a kitchen, like the day we move in it would be torn out, it was that bad. Bathrooms needed to be redone, upstairs painted, well needed to be repaired, redrilled, everything needed updating, etc.

If I was single, or if we were old and had no kids at home it might have been great even with the work needing done, but not good for our family.

We found a few more prospects, we'll see how they pan out.
 
I hear ya.....I went to the estate sale at that house. My folks actually looked at it but it needed to much work. It was for sale by the kids before it went with a real estate person. Could have been had for a whole lot cheaper. Good luck with the hunt. There is a house off Durant with 4 acres.
 
I'm still confused by the estate part. The guy died in 1994. Or did his wife just die or something? They just dropped the price to $199k. Unless you could get it for $160k I wouldn't even consider it.

Where on Durant is that house? Is is FSBO? Not coming up in the real estate search.
 
My grandfather used to have a pasture for cattle under the high voltage lines coming from a nuke plant a couple miles away (2M and 750K volts on the two runs coming out). Anyway, the lines were way up high (worked on them with helicopters) but they managed to run the electric fence for his cattle. Was a real bitch to work on the fence, never could shut it down. Also, when my mom rode her bike under the lines, the springs in the seat of her bike would zap her ass. We didn't live under the lines but the cattle always seems normal whatever that means. Adds nothing to this conversation I know but I always thought that was funny stuff.
 
I am not sure, the sale was close to a year ago. When the Mt. Vernon house first got listed it was a whole lot more than 199k. The one off Durant is expensive, but your paying for the land and privacy. MLS #: 1856246. House is only 2 bedrooms so I doubt that would work for most families.

I have power lines over my shop that only operates as a backup for Butner Hospital. It's not powerful enough to hum but I can tell when it's on cause the gravel in the driveway becomes magnetic. I tried showing to a friend once who thought I was crazy trying to pick up rocks with a magnet. Then I found out it's only operated once in a while...:shaking:

Really freaked me out the first time though when I was fishing a rod nut I dropped in a motor and I laid the magnet down on the gravel.o_O

I searched for the old thread and oh well, I guess the power lines have made me crazy...
