We are getting to the end of the 46 CJ2a rebuild and starting to think about tires!!

Anyone know a "local" source of military NDT tires or anything very similar?

6.00x16 was the old designation, they appear to be about 28" tall according to the descriptions. If we found a "knobby" version instead that would be great too, more sidehill traction!!

Thanks in advance for any help on this! (Shipping for 5 of them is $80ish or so)

Sam, check with hillbilly21 on here. he's the guy I did the Graphics for on all of his restorations. If he doesn't have them, I know he has a source for them. He's often times over on the Early cj5 board. PM me and I can also send you his email address if you are having a hard time getting him.

Blech.. We called NDT tires "No Damn Traction" in the Army.

Some skinny swampers? Can you fit a 31?

Too tall...we are going for the stock size if at all possible!! (Not to mention too wide/scrubs the sides very easily, the orig was only 6" rim and tread was maybe 5.x" wide)

Firestone has a knobby version that I like but cost goes from 68 each to 100+

Rather than go with NDT's, I'd look for a set of Co-op Grip Spurs. They're still made for distribution in the Tennessee farmers co-op circuit. A bud ran them on his Commando for several sets with decent results. When my trailer tire blew out in Cocke Ctny. TN a few years back, we hit the first available Co-op and they had a pile in stock.

You should be OK with a 7.5x16... a bit wider than the NDTs, but should aid in floatation. They have some seriously deep tread, pretty hard wearing, and are gonna outperform the NDTs (like comparing street radials to MTs).

Pretty sure SS makes as low as a 28" tire.

They do, in a 15" rim, smallest they make in our 16" rims is the 31.x or so...otherwise Swamper would be perfect.

Yep, Hershey / Universal is the best online price, but $70-80 worth of shipping too, was hoping to find a good local alternative.

I'll 2nd these....

..."I'd look for a set of Co-op Grip Spurs"....My cousin had a set of these on a Toyota "Farm Truck"

He got 'em from Southern States Ag/Truck Tire Sales...Deepest Tread I've ever seen on a tire that size...~31" or so

...I just got some new 34 x 10.50 LTB's mounted up for the 'ol CJ...I know they make 'em smaller sizes too....they oughta dig well from the looks of em...

For the last several years we been runnin some 7.50 x 16 General Truck tires(measured ~32") w/ tubes in 'em on the old military 16x6 rims....been a good combo too...got a deal on the LTB's, so given those a try

Good luck and post up some pics too...

I use 7.5x16 dynamark mud grips on my M38 and man those things dig.Hard compound tho and no flex in the side wall at all.Found them at my local tire store for 70 a piece.Biggest problem with these tires and I imagine all old style bias ply tires,if you flat tow it long distances and your front is out of allignment,it will eat those badboys up.

I picked up my 7x16 ndcc tires at white owl years ago when surplus M151 tires were being dumped on the market but they haven't had them for years.Call George or Terry up there and see what they can get for you.

Sam,

looks like maybe a couple 31" LTB's rim size 16 (maybe too wide for ya) in the interco Blem section

find a couple more, from them or locally..??

Sam's used to sell the old 7.50x16 Generals we got, haven't seen any there in years....they're rough & tough, made for haulin weight, not crawlin rox...but they do wayyy Better with more of the right foot ...maybe the other places...BJ's, Costco etc have something similar

Let us know what you end up with...

X2. I had a set of these a while back on an old woods beater and loved them.

Dad hasn't bought anything yet, but chances are he is going to get a mud terrain like tire here locally at Hall Tire. Good prices, nice guy, called me up when he heard I was looking.

They are pretty aggressive (which dad says he could stand a bit less aggressive) but they should do really well for getting around the property.

NDTs, just heard too many stories about no traction...
