So i am getting a 88 Chevrolet crew cab dually really cheap from a guy. And he tells me that it had a th400 in it but he put in a 700r4 and a big tranny cooler but he didnt put in the lock up controller thingy ma jig... (dont know the real name of it) My question is... how far can you drive it before its gonna damage the transmission.. the guy lives about three hours from me and i would like to just drive it without any problems.

it shouldnt have any effect on the tranny,of course it will not lock up.we have a 88 oldsmoble with a 403 and unhooked the lockup converter 5 ,6 yrs ago,no problems with it.its bored and has alittle git up n go,and the trannys fine.
hope this helps

anyone else have an opinion.. or that can mention something that hasnt been yet?? Does anyone know what that lock-up controller is actually called??

It will just work like every other non lockup transmission, or like it works before it locks/when it's not locked up except it will run hotter. A much larger problem is whether or not he properly adjusted the tv cable. Called a lockup kit or lockup controller.

I don't see that 700R4 living very long in the heaviest configured 1-ton truck. Hope you don't tow anything with it...

well supposedly the 700r4 is built...... so i guess we will just roll with it and keep it maintained and hope for the best. When i go up there i will see if he has any of the paperwork on it and see what is " built" about it..

well.. if it happens... i have a th400 i could stuff in there.. but until then i am just going to leave it.. i could luck out and it wouldnt take a :poop: but i am sure it will too at some point.

you could wire up a lock-up with just a switch and some wire..... theres a plug on the side of the trans.... it has 3 wires in it..... red, white, black...... you hook the black and white to eachother then run the red to a switch in the cab..... when you want overdrive/torque converter lock-up, flip the switch.....:driver:

would the white and black just act as a ground then and if i run it to the fuse panel or put in a fusable link could i leave the switch on all of the time?

you could, but one thing i noticed is that if i leave the switch on, it shifts into overdrive earlier than i want it to.....doesn't hurt it, but if i'm trying to get on it, it shifts into OD, and gets into the lower RPM's....less power
