remove brakes, remove 4 bolts that hold brake backing plate to axletube and pull axleshaft. no biggie

no offense but if you can't figure out how to get the axles out, you surely aren't going to get the ring and pinon setup correctly

You don't need to remove the brakes tho, just the brake drums and there is a hole in the flange to get to the nuts holding the axle in. You might need to pry the axle out with a prybar or a slide hammer puller tho

thanks renegade, came out great!

now facing another problem, got the spider gears and side gears out, installed the ring gear side coupler and it fit perfect, and when I try to put on the other side it goes on about 1 cm and stops...

I noticed on the gear on that side, the inside where it connects with the shaft there is some black gunk (evidently from 27 years of buildup) I think im gonna pull the shaft and get a fine wire brush and brush the teeth on the shaft and make sure they are nice and clean

Check the clearance with the shaft out. Slide the side coupler into the carrier just to make sure the gunk is the problem and not the the clearance in the side of the carrier.

Check, did that, all is well, pulled the shaft completely out and then tried to put the coupler on and it still stopped at about 1 cm...hmmmm

No offense, but lockrights and similar "lunchbox" lockers don't require any work with the ring and pinion.

Thanks for the heads up:flipoff2:

But in the first post it mentions nowhere that hes installing lunchbox lockers. Either way if you don't know how the axles come out you really shouldn't be inside the cover

The style of lockers were mentioned in another thread

Everyone and I mean EVERYONE learns better by trying to do things themselves. There's nothing that would be permanently screwed up by cracking the mysterious diff case. Also, isn't this the noob section? There shouldn't be any flaming in here.

x2 The best lessons I have learned are the ones I fawked up the first time on.

ok so cleaning didnt work...now im gonna try the Dremel method I was told that its possible that the shaft has "mushroomed" and to try and file down the splines a hair on the end...we shall see

If you wanna wait until this evening, I can come over there and look it over real good. Ive installed many lockrights in my day.

hey man yea that would be awesome if you could...just give me a ring when u get off work and ill be sure to be at home...thanks matt, cya soon

i have no way to get that nut off and it appears that someone has tried with the improper equipment and really boogered it up...
anyone got any ideas?
Seth

Ive got a socket that will fit that im sure. However, a hammer and chisel or a hammer and screwdriver would work, and is probably how it got like it is.
