Long URL but... 27mpg Cherokee?!?

27mpg in a '98 XJ?! I've got a '98 and I average about 17mpg. I don't care if he does have a 2-door, something ain't right there...

Several ways to get that kind of MPG in an XJ (or any vehicle).
1) Put way smaller tires on it and don't change the speedo gear. (there are several variations on this theme...change speedo gear w/o changing anything else, change diff gears and don't correct anything else...)
2) Drive down hill, all the time.
3) Lie
4) Type badly
5) Do the math wrong...

So I'm guessing in the real world a cherokee will get about 20 on a good day, right?

Option #6) Diesel swap

I regularly get 16-18 in my 90 XJ, 4 door, auto, 4wd. Lately I have been getting 20-21 mpg because it runs hotter in the hot weather. Seen the same thing on my TJ too. Normally 13-14, now 14-15, and I actually got 16.3mpg about 3 weeks ago (00 TJ, 5spd, 35" bfg AT's, 4900+ lbs).

It actually has more to do with the fuel...It is changed for summer and winter.

With modern fuel injection, you will see better mileage in hotter temperatures. Colder air is more dense, and therefore has more oxygen, so the system injects more fuel. When it heats up, there isn't as much oxygen, so the FI system tweaks down the amount of fuel injected to reach stoich levels. I don't know if the gas companies change the mixture or not, but I do know that when my jeep runs at 215F I get 15mpg, and when it runs at 180F, I get 13 mpg.

Update on Cherokee MPG

I wonder if the 27mpg guy is in rehab. Maybe, maybe not.

I dumped the TJ and bought a 1997 4 door XJ.

First tank, I went 329 miles on 14.9 gallons. 22 mpg!

I checked the odometer against highway mileage markers and it's right on.

235x75r15 tires, 3.55 gears, 4.0 I6, AW4

I'll report back when I put on a 2" lift and some whopping 30 inch tires. :driver:
