Two summers ago I dropped a 1978 sb 350 in my 86 k10, retired the old 305. I had the 350 it bored .030", a kb performance torque cam(specs unknown) installed, and I added a holley 650 spread bore carb and heddman headers. I'm guessing I'm in the 250"ish" hp range. I'd like to be in the 300 plus. My question is what is a good combination of heads, cam, and intake to get me there. Stroking is out of the question. Vortec heads, camel hump, dual plane or single plane intake, what's the best combo? Thanks in advance.

If you are looking for off idle performance stay with a dual plain intake.. I cant see where you would need a single plain playing in rocks or mud. If you have the money check out the top end kits from Trick Flow(Summit). Those kits do what they say and really cheaper than buying the parts seperate

trick flow is awesome on sbf (were they got there start in the fox mustang drag scene) but Im less than impressed with their Gm offerings.

Contrary to popular belief any decent set of aftermarket heads will outflow a double hump head, not that they werent the cats meow in their day.

Id be looking more at the tq numbers than the hp numbers because for our world thats where its at, and honestly with a little gearing help you could be happy where you are.

If you gotta have more power, either go with a good set of aftermarket heads 9pick your poison) or have yours re worked and get the EVs into the IVs...get a cam matched to what your heads flow (comp is great on their tech order line tell em what yu got and they will match it up) and go from there.

If it were mine Id be more intersted in gear ratios and getting a throttle body et up on there and theen worry about more power.

A good set of used stock vortec heads and an edlebrock vortec intake will net you anywhere from 275-320 dependiing on your compression ratio. if the engine is already .030 over then u most likely put flat top pistons in it. if you did then your CR is somewhere around 10.0 to 1 witch should put you about where you want. dont be to quick to jump into big dollar aftermarket heads. if your lookin for 300 vortecs are the way to go. there cheap. for under 800 you can get new heads and intake. bolt on power. just be careful b/c stock vortecs will only take a cam lift of .480 so if you changed your rocker arm ratio then you need to check your cam card before you do anything.

If your going low buck and not looking to spend alot, hit up the junkyards around your area. any truck heads from 95 to 99 5.0 or 5.7. the 305 5.0 heads are going to give you much more compression due to the fact that there 58cc, the 5.7 350 heads are 64 cc. note that you will have to purchase a vortec style intake. you can look for the vortecs in 95-99 trucks and tahoes suburbans ect.. they will have centerbolt valve covers. dont mistake them with the centerbolt TBI heads. as they are NOT vortec heads. a good used set will run you about 300 bucks depending on mileage.
