looking into getting a winch

it will more than likely be a warn... im trying to see if anyone has any input to which one i should go with, as of right now i may be able to get a pretty good deal on a HS9500I or a little older 8274 (im not limiting myself to these two either)
also, would anyone happen to know how much these would go for, being in good condition?

any help would be great
thanks, chris

The 8274 is nearly indestructible and a very, very capable winch. the only drawback is the size. Its freakin huge and heavy, and expensive, but well worth the $$$

If its for a Jeep or any other little 4x4, the smaller, lighter HS9500I would work well.

Its hard to put these winches in any category together caus they are so different.

Either one is a good winch.

it would go on a cj5 on full widths with 350 and stuff (i dont know if that matters, but whatever) well when you say they dont really go in the same category, how would you categorize them? does that make any sense

Well, the 8274 is huge, heavy, and very powerful. It works great for full size vehicles as well as smaller vehicles. you wouldn't want it on the front of a sami though. Way too big. Its been around for a long time and is very reliable and popular. I think also the 8274 holds more cable as well, so take that into consideration as well.

The HS 9500 is much smaller and lighter. Great for smaller vehicles like Jeeps. However, this does not mean it cannot be used on any other vehicle.

I guess its what you want. I've seen both on small Jeeps and huge full size trucks. You want smaller sleaker look, then go with the 9500, but if you want a big huge winch, then go with the 8274. I'm sure neither one will fail you.

Also, the mounting is different which means you'll need a different style bracket/bumper for either winch, so look at that when selecting the winch.

Do you have cooling problems with the 350? If so, then you'll want to stay away from the 8274 cause it is so tall it blocks the radiator much more.

There is a lot to consider between these 2 winches. Instead of being in different categories the 2 different winchs are prob. better described kind of in the same manner as Manual trans versus Auto trans. Its just what fits you and what you like and how you are gonna use it, neither one is better than the other.

get the 8274... no question. Besides the performance, it just looks right on a classic rig like yours.

yeah, it's big and heavy, but it pulls like no other, and has a TON of little things that make it so good. (no need for the eye on one end of the cable, handles water dunkings better, etc...)

sorry to hijack but im looking into a winch too after several people told me going to tellico with out one was a bad idea. i have a line on a warn M8000 for about $250, would it be enough to pull my truck? ive got a full size blazer on 1 tons and 39.5's, not exactly a lightweight. but my doors, top and tailgate have been removed and i dont have a spare (i know, i know). i dont carry much more than 150-200 lbs of extra stuff with me on the trail, so i figure im coming out at about 5500lbs. could an M8000 handle that?

Metto.. I bet you're light on your weight...

The 8k will help you out, and for $250, you could always put it in the back later on, or sell it.

weighed it at the dump scales with tailgate and doors still on and i was 5800 IIRC. i figure doors and tailgate weigh about 300. i talked to that kid with the M8000 tonight, im going to look at it agian tomorrow (havent seen it seince the end of school). probably will buy it after this weekend. im thinking some kind of mount with the grill cut out and try to tuck it up tight

As Rich said, it will help. But,..... if you have to pull dead weight up a rock, out of a mud hole, it will be a BIG strain on it. ( ask me how I know) I experienced this when I lost my TC on lower 2. the 8274 while still an 8000lb winch, would have pulled me. I do believe they are way under rated! So before I cooked a perfectly good winch, I upgraded to a 12000lb one. T M8000 would be a good one to put on the rear though.

Sounds like you have the doors and tailgate on now but remove them for wheelin. Unless you can honestly say you take them off every single time you wheel, you are kidding yourself by discounting that extra weight. I would plan on 5800 lb for your rig, plus your 200Lb of stuff, plus 150Lb Full size spare which puts you at 6150Lb without driver or passengers. Rule of thumb is 1.5 times total weight (1.5 x 6150) putting you at 9225Lb. The M8000 seems a little light for your rig as your forever winch. It sounds like a good start for the price and is better than no winch at all.

no my doors, tailgate and top are off all of the time, even when i drive it on the street. the interior is stripped down to the bare minimum - i dont even have a radio

Carry a snatch block.. it'll be slow, but not worm-gear drive slow..

8274's are very much underrated.

so if i snatch block all the time and stay on the first few layers of cable i should be okay?

The snatch block will make you unwind twice as much cable, which will have the advantage of putting you on the stronger wraps of the winch.

For most situations, you should be OK. But ya never know...

I had a REP8000 on my full size bronco. all stock except 36" TSLs and spool. Had to winch on upper 2 at Tellico and it was straining. I almost thought it was gonna give up on me. Go bigger if you can. However, if you get an 8K# winch, get the 8274, it'll pull it.

And yeah, I like the 8274 on the classic rigs, however, they look awful on the front of a TJ.

Yep. I missed out on the trip when he played CruzahKayak :D

yea but arent ramseys know for being a little on the weak side for their ratings and warns are are a little under rated?

got my M8000 tonight. all the wiring, fairlead, and remote for $250. im happy and if it isnt big enough for the front, ill pull it off and sell it for a bigger one or mount it in the rear
