Lunch Box Locker

it replaces the spider gears in the exhisting carrier

Look up Lock RIght or Aussie Locker, THose are lunch box lockers.

Like Jeff stated, they replace the spider and side gears in the diff carrier and can be a cheaper alternative to a full on locker like a Detroit.

In many cases MUCH easier to install as many applications do not require the removal of the carrier ( meaning no measuring of backlash or dealing with shims when reinstalling)

In theory they are easier to install but dana 35's, 30 and 44 require ring gear removal to remove the cross pin. Which means the carrier has to come out.

You definately don't need to remove the ring gear on any ratio d35. If you know what you are doing it can be done in under an hour.

I think

I think whether you need to remove the ring gear or not has to with if it blocks the cross pin.

D30 with 3.73s, ring gear had to be removed.

you can cut the gears to get it out, like you have to do on an 8.8 to get the crosspin in, But i don't much like cutting gears unless totally nescisary i would take the ring gear off to install. its just not that much more work.
