Just wondering if anyone has used macco before? I for an older vehicle that isnt worth much at all but looks pretty bad but still runs good. Its been badly repainted once. I was thinking about sanding it down and using spray can primer and then taking it to macco for a cheap paintjob. I would be ok with a run or to no biggie I just dont want the paint pealling off in a year. Any input would be helpfull.

From what I have heard if you go with macco then your paint will look good and start chipping off in about 6 months.

Never been to Maaco...but I've had two "bargain" paint jobs done...with opposite experiences...

Had an '89 Beretta painted at Earl Scheib in around '95. I can't remember the exact cost, but pretty sure it was under $400...the removed the "badges" by my request, and filled in the holes. You could still see a shadow where they didn't put enough paint to cover up the bondo. I took it back to complain, and the response I got was priceless. One of those come-backs you just can't argue with. I've used it many times when discussing customer service. After I finished complaining, the manager responded with (and I PROMISE you this is a direct quote): Sir, what you're talking about is perfection, and that's not my company's policy. Said it with a straight face, and I just couldn't come back with an appropriate response. The paint job looked even worse after the first waxing (and I did wait the 4-6 weeks they asked me to).

Next up was a '79 Chevy C10 pickup. It was a faded yellow (almost like a Post-It note) color when I bought it in '98. Took this one to Econo Auto Painting. $200 paint job, +$50 for a full-size truck, +$100 for extra clearcoat, +$7 for environment fees...$357 out the door. I wanted to keep it yellow, so I didn't have to worry about door jambs, or the tailgate, or any other trim. So we chose '93 Ford Probe yellow. Basically "Corvette yellow". Now, it didn't go perfect. Two "problems". One...they got a little paint on the chrome exhaust pipes, which they quickly removed with paint thinner when I pointed it out. Second problem was a little yellow overspray on the top of each of the tires. When I pointed it out, the guy went back inside and (again, I'm dead serious) came out with a can of black spray paint. In a matter of a minute, it was "fixed". I would GLADLY pay the $357 again for that same paint job. Looked just as good when I sold the truck four years later.

A paint job is more than just paint. what I mean is this. If you sand it and do the spraycan primer then have them shoot it, you are asking for problems unless you really know what you are doing.

The body shop I used to work for had a "client" that would do just that to cut some money on cars he had painted to sell. Each and every one had a severe paint peeling issue shortly after the color went on. The only way to fix it was to strip off the new paint and his primer and do it right. Of course, at this point the paint job cost more than twice as much as what having it done right the first time would have cost.

My father had his cherokee painted at Macco ( I think) 3 years ago and it still looks brand new. No runs, no drips, no dirt in the paint, no overspray, no missed masking, etc. Looks good. He got the more expensive deal (not the $200 one), but the $400 job and its awesome for what he paid.

If you use the spray can primer you need to have them spray it with sanding sealer before painting otherwise it will probably peel. I would just lightly sand it and let them shoot it!

Do you buy a filet migon at McDonalds?

They do a good job if you lightly sand EVERYTHING, and make sure it is really, really dust/wax/oil free.

mu friend got his car painted there, paint/prep/clearcoat. It was a bit more that the ole $99 special. But the paint turned out pretty decent, a few spots where you can tell wasnt cleaned to well. But its got a 2 year warrenty and all.

Well you gey What you pay For

I have Painted many Cars I use to do It for a living. For a good Quailty Paint Job unless it is the Buddy deal should run you about 1500 that is a 2stage base coat/ clear coat urithane. It will last many years

That is not a custom job Just just one that will look good and last. I will be painting my J10 and expect to pay Arounf $500 Just for the paint material in the can. and when I am done I expect it to Cost me around $800 using my labor(free).

Sorry but that is just not True :) I f it is well sanded the paint will stick
With that logic the sanding sealer will peal and the so will the paint

Sorry man don't mean to make fun but you have to give the guy props atleast he tried to tell the truth LOL.

I had a car of mine painted at maaco a few years back. Before I had it painted my father and I did all the body work and sanding to it, removed any and every trim, mirror, lights that would come off the car. Put it on a trailer and took it to maaco. I was very pleased with the end result. The thing about maaco is they have guys who can do some awesome work and have the skill just because they have the experience from painting so many cars. Where they are lacking is in the prep work such as sanding and taping everything off. They are trying to get the best job they can do it in the shortest amount of time. Not the best job they can do period. If you spend the time taking care of all the details that they are not going to before hand it will turn out very nice.

I've always heard that spray can primer will negatively react with a paint job causing it to peel and that is the purpose of the sanding sealer. I'm not the expert though!

you're exactly right...that was my whole point...you couldn't even argue with that statement...

Thanks for all the info i never expected this much. The car is in bad shape paintwise and only worth about $500 to begin with so dropping $1500 into a paint job is out of the question. I just want it to look a little better. Its been repainted already CHEAP job they painted over the pin stripes and its a dual and feela like 1500 grit sandpaper so its not very smooth. Anyway I just want to sand it down and respray it. I am not even woried about the dings or dents. I have considered just doing it outside myself. Its a 86 camry with 50,000 actual miles but looks bad. I cant aford to drive the truck paying $2.20 a gallon all the time.
