I came home from work Wednesday night to find that my mailbox had been hit by a truck or something. The post is broken off about half way up. I think the reason it got hit is because it is too close to the road. Another thing I have always thought odd is that my mailbox is across the street from my house, not on my property. So now that I have to put up a new post and move it back from the road I was wondering why I couldn't just put it on my property.

Umm, does your toad have all the boxes on the same side? I know the mailman might not be too happy if yours became the only box on the wrong side of the road.

If im not mistaken you have to put them on a certain side of the road....I could be wrong though

I'll have to check that out. It is a rural road with few houses. You guys are probably right.

Per the USPS regs

3.2.6 Location

Subject to state laws and regulations, a curbside mailbox must be placed to allow safe and convenient delivery by carriers without leaving their vehicles. The box must be on the right-hand side of the road in the direction of travel of the carriers on any new rural route or highway contract route, in all cases where traffic conditions are dangerous for the carriers to drive to the left to reach the box, or where their doing so would violate traffic laws and regulations.

yup, at my old house, all the boxes were on 1 side. That way the mail carrier only has to go down, but not back up, the street.

I wouldn't do ANYTHING to piss of the mailman. That's one dude that you really don't want to have hating you...

Definitely not going to piss him off. I might give him a good laugh at the post I'm thinking about putting up.

some people put it on the side the mail man hits first but not sure if thats why they do it. I'd stop him one day and ask him which is better for him. Always nice to make allies

most if not all rural roads and any high traffic roads have mail boxes on 1 side of the road. This speeds up service (basically cuts the route in half). If all of them are on 1 side of the road, then keep it there or you may never get your mail...

The PO also has published dimensions as to the location of the mailbox in relation to the road (setback, height, size, etc.)

a giant moust trap is not the way to make him laugh.

LOL, nah, I've got an old Ford D44 TTB arm with the knuckle still attached that I am thinking of using.

From the USPS website:
3.2.4 Mailbox Post
The post or other support for a curbside mailbox must be neat and of adequate strength and size. The post may not represent effigies or caricatures that tend to disparage or ridicule any person. The box may be attached to a fixed or movable arm.

A friend of mine hit a patch of ice several years ago and wiped out 7 mailboxes. I asked him if he had a postage stamp on his hunting licence. Looked like he had bagged his limit.

My grandad has a mailbox that to date has totalled 1 car and left another needing a tow truck...but no more mailbox baseball around there since about 97....

My grandfather had one like that, the city of rocky mount made him take it down because it was a hazzard if someone ran off the road.. it was 3'x3' brick column with a box in the center

Mailman told me that it was against rules to move a mailbox from it's normal location. They do not have to deliver the mail, even if you have moved it only a few ft. So going accross the rd. will probably get ya a talkin' too by the mailman.

we had ours run over several times at work. we requested from the Post Master to move the mail box to our side of the road (actually in our parking lot) the mail man has to come in about everyday anway to pick up stuff that wont fit in the box. post master said they arent allowed to make left turns. then how does he get into our parking lot to pick stuff up?

Um - comes in from the other direction maybe?

Apparently (from PMs) a few are interested in a car totalling mailbox.

12" Heavy Wall Process Pipe.
6' Buried with 4' above ground.
filled and filled in with concrete.
1/4" rebar spurs welded and laid into brick mortar

Honda Accord never survived
