Guys,
i'm putting a NV4500 dodge behind my 302 mustang engine. my question is what tooth flywheel do i need? i was told by the guy that put together the combo for me that i need a flywheel out of a 89 5.0 F-150.

it has a late 80's bellhousing on the tranny, so all i'm looking for is the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate.

It's either the 157 tooth or the 164..
anyone..

thanks,
brian

The tooth count for the 2 different 302 flywheels are in retrospect to the diameter. The 164 is bigger. The deciding factor is which bellhousing you are using? The starter is located 1/2" further out on a 164 tooth and I believe a 12" clutch can be used. The 157 tooth is limited to 11" clutch I believe.
Just be sure to match the weights! Use a 28 oz flywheel weight on a older 302 and 64 oz on a newer one. You'll have to research for anything particular for I only know generic answers...

Hope that helps!

You can use any flywheel from a SBF so long as the one you have has options for an 11" clutch.

A good resource is Advance Adapters. I've used the online catalog several times recently and helps you determine exactly what will or won't work.

Flywheel diameter will be determined from the bellhousing.
Flywheel counter weight should be 50oz if it is from 1982.5 or up.

The F150 flywheel will be the right balancer for a 82.5 and up engine, but idk about diameter for your bell.

Thanks for your replies..
i've been searching AA's website, i'm just not finding the correct information...they don't have much on NV4500 to Ford...
i'm thinking that i have the larger bellhousing..so am i correct to assume that i could use the 164 tooth flywheel??

Any reason not to go with a NP-435 or ZF? When I did the ZF swap I orderd the flywheel to match the motor 94 5.0 when switch from the auto.

I'm assure opinions can vary on this one, but...

1. The dreaded leaky hydraulic assisted clutch was a biggie in deciding for me. I HATE leaky systems. Replacement pumps are cheap but the time and new driveway sealer every 5 years can sure add up. By going NV4500 with AA adapter, you can use the original manual clutch setup. ZF can't.

And 2. If you wanted to swap the tranny down the road for a different motor... you're screwed. As a matter, if you wanted to put one behind anything besides a 385 series or a SBF, say an FE or modular motor, your screwed for it's a 1 piece design.

I say for the sake of not limiting yourself in the future... go NV4500. But that's only beneficial for future change and non leakage.

As for price, the ZF is probably cheaper even in the long run. I just hate leaky setups and being limited.

IMHO

makes sense. i havent had a leak issue but I can see where it would be a PITA.

Plus he drives his alot on the street and wants the 5th gear overdrive option.

and a ZF mounts straught up to a 300/302/351, 5.7:1 first w/ a .8:1 OD 5th gear
